I worked at Statistics Canada full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I held this contract position during both the 2011 & 2016 National Census operation and had an excellent experience. The recruitment and selection process was thorough and clear. There was excellent onboarding and training with support and guidance from Leaders throughout the entire life of the project. An excellent professional experience and one i hope to continue with future Census Operations!

    Cons

Hard work, long hours, steep learning curve if in a role you have never done before but something you will never regret or forget!

I have been working at Statistics Canada full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Large institution producing statistics covering a very broad scope, meaning there's work for all types of interests. Flexible work schedule. The type of work you do and the environment can vary wildly depending on your division and team. Great benefits.

    Cons

Can be slow to adopt new technology because of bureaucracy and security standards.

I worked at Statistics Canada part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Shift work was initially helpful for those who may need it due to other obligations. The health benefits were great. Good way to get your foot wet in call center experience or government jobs. Training was good.

    Cons

Poor management. Double standards. Inflexible with shifts/hours. Felt pressured to call like a robot. As a result, had to do poor work (data entry wise) to get your numbers on target because you can't overspend your time on a case. No motivation to do well or progress. Did not feel satisfied especially when dealing with angry respondents and supervisors/managers who don't really care. You do get monitored and I... don't believe it's random as I was told, very micromanaged. There was microaggressions and bullying from management/supervisors. Not much inclusion and accommodation, unless you are well liked. Lots of unhappy workers. It was a sad, unfulfilling job.

    Advice to Management

Better HR is needed. Clean up bad workers and rethink the policies. Managers and supervisors need to be monitored too. Better promotion of work/life balance for employees. No more double standards please. More consistency across the offices. More compassion.

I worked at Statistics Canada for more than a year

    Pros

Short term contract that helped to hone communication skills and basic knowledge of working for federal government. Great work environment. The staff really supported each other and worked as a team.

    Cons

A little bit unorganized as many staff were brought in as contract workers for the census project with a very short timeline to learn processes before the census.
