I worked at Statoil full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are amazing. They paid for me and my family. Unfortunately that is the only thing I miss. However you will need it because the stress will eventually affect your health working there.

    Cons

Promotions? Not unless you are in Norway. If you like to be treated like you are worthless and incompetent you are at the right place. HR obviously turns a blind eye to the hostile work environment and allows management to belittle employees in front of others. Raises? That's funny. Bonuses are a mockery IF you get one. You get performance reviews almost on a monthly basis. Actually it's more like a review of how worthless you are even if you meet or exceed your goals. Sincerity doesn't even reach managements eyes. Corporate goals are unrealistic. The undue stress caused by backstabbing managers seriously affected my health causing high blood pressure from the stress. Since I left it has gone away! Go figure!

    Advice to Management

Find managers who know how to be a part of a team and not a dictator.

    Pros

Not many...health premium. Industry pays well, Statoil pays ok, not good, not bad.

    Cons

HR is at its worst behavior, recruits bad leaders who struggle to lead due to lack of expertise.

There are bad apples in the basket, some leaders show hostile behavior.

    Advice to Management

Norway, you better be honest and use your brains. HR needs a new manager. You give too much powers to HR. Re think and act accordingly. Stop this hostile environment

I worked at Statoil (More than a year)

    Pros

Very few...worst job environment ever experienced, horrible people with horrible ethics...

    Cons

Do not work for this company!!!! The company basically exploits contract labor...full time employees get promoted and encouraged to take time off (work/life balance) at the expense of contrac consultants and personnel.

    Advice to Management

You should not have the privilege of operating in the US!!! leave!!

I have been working at Statoil full-time

    Pros

Great benefits: free healthcare, pension, 401k. Normal benefits as compared to other oil and gas companies in Houston

    Cons

This is the worst company I have ever worked at. Leadership literally either demeans employees or pretends to like them. There is very little opportunity for growth, training, or to move to other roles.

There are no black and white lines of accountability. People constantly argue over who is responsible for different tasks, that ultimately are not done or performed poorly because no one knew who was responsible to do it. GBS employees work for weeks straight without even a Saturday or Sunday off, with little appreciation, and only the message that if they performed better, long hours would not be necessary.
Most people have have been employees under 3 years, and feel stuck because of low oil prices. I have never worked in an organization where people openly talk about how unhappy they are and how they can't wait to get out of the company. I regret working for this company.

    Advice to Management

Take leadership courses, try to understand the people who work for you are not inept trolls, and treat them like professional. Stop talking down to people. Stop pretending like progress is being made when in reality things are worse than ever. Acknowledge that when turnover is high and culture is poor, that leadership is the problem, not the close calendar or whatever other excuse you can create.

I have been working at Statoil full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to hide while waiting on prices to come back. They have good CVX operated projects which is the only real projects they gave in GOM.

    Cons

I have watched this company since the purchase of hydro. They force the US employees to conform to the Norwegian socialist norms. There sop is to act like they are accomplishing goals with no actual results.

    Advice to Management

    The real world is coming.

I have been working at Statoil full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Few unfortunately. If you are 'average' and Norwegian, this is probably a good fit but not recommended for high caliber folks from other countries. Good vacation packages, especially on the Norwegian side of the house where it seems employees are on perpetual vacation or holiday. Friendly people throughout organization.

    Cons

Most management is lower caliber than in comparable size organizations in the US. US employees are third class citizens - heavy Norwegian bias persists in almost every aspect of the job, very few opportunities, low stability for an organization of its size, very few self-motivated individuals, low morale - especially in US.

    Advice to Management

US employees are treated like third class citizens. Bureaucracy is among worst of any large organization.

    Pros

Good benefit. Ok salary. Work life balance except for quarter close

    Cons

Terrible management. No processes. No one knows anything. I regretted accepting this offer over others. Company uses SAP but system isn't functioning at utmost best. The blame game company. Finger pointing. Great employees hired lately but poor management and no system makes it hard to function. I wish to leave soon. Everyone is waiting for Oil price to go up and leave. High TurnOver. Not a company to be. It's a terrible work environment

    Advice to Management

Change all management and stop changing staff. Management are not qualified and don't know what they doing.

    Pros

    Benefits package is good.

    Cons

GBS leaders, some not all are just downright horrible. It's obvious that they got the jobs by default. The employee morale is low. Zero respect from management. They abosolutely do not live by the core values

    Advice to Management

Hire EXPERIENCED and QUALIFIED managers. Don't promote just cause they've been with the company and are very technical. Management skills and training are a must!

I worked at Statoil full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Statoil states its value as open, courageous, hands-on, and caring. It tried hard to attract the talent in US when the oil price was high by offering good perks.

    Cons

People were told a staff cut of 15% during this summer after the new US head arrived. This was also communicated internally before the very last 3-4 weeks. Unexpectedly people were asked to meet with HR 1-by-1 escorted by the security. The team was immediately annihilated. People left the building in a daze. It tuned out to be a massive layoff of over 50%. It has been planned secretly by an ambitious manager who is keen to please the new boss.

    Advice to Management

Having the right people at the right position is the key to the success. But for a former CFO who only cares about the number, he needs to understand what is the root cause of low efficiency and high cost.
