I have been working at Statoil full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-it's a job in downturn times
-health insurance used to be free, they've recently decided to start payroll deductions for it.

    Cons

    -Completely disorganized
-I don't think anyone here really knows what's going on or how to address planning issues that constantly pop up
    -mediocre pay
-field employees do not get 9/80 schedule or other benefits that office employees get ( food, gyms, social interaction, networking)
-I haven't been here long but I have noticed most higher ups and expats are Norwegian. Not real sure how that would work for growing your career if you international goals
-Calling IT or reading the webpage is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Figure something out because what we're doing now is not working.

Treat field employees like you would want to be treated.

If there were to be a buy out or optional layoff tomorrow I would take it.

Interesting tasks from all aspects of a huge company. I always learn something new which makes the job joyful. In my sector I also have 20% of my time to do self development.

    Cons

I have been working at Statoil full-time

    Pros

Good work life balance and benefits.

    Cons

Career opportunities are restricted to the top 200 list. Others suffer with unending bureaucracy to make internal moves that not always are synonym of any career progression. Leaders are not selected based on competency, while extremely competent people are used on simple and meaningless jobs that hardly add any value for the company or the individual delivering on it.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the people and on motivating your employees with challenging tasks that add value both for the company and the individual.

I have been working at Statoil full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, at least for my job function. But maybe that's standard for this industry, I don't know.

    Cons

Not a place to grow a career. When I first got here, a lot of lip service was given to thinking "out of the box" in order to become a truly world leading enterprise, kind of like Bell Labs once was. Boy that went out the window fast with the oil downturn. Assignments and goals are arbitrarily set by management which doesn't know what they are doing. Working here is akin to factory work where it's just a day-to-day grind. Why? Because you're working on what management thinks would be important, not on what most closely fits your training and career objectives. If you're a creative person with ambition, this is not a place for you. On the other hand, if you like repetitive days and are a day to day kind of person, you may like it.

Moreover, their system for evaluating your performance is demeaning and condescending. You have behavior and performance metrics which are both highly subjective. Yearly review kind of feels like being back in elementary school where if the teacher likes you, you get a sunshine sticker, but if not you get a stormy cloud. Even if you accomplish all of your goals and expectations as laid out at the beginning of the year, management could step in and lower your score with no explanation given. Unfortunately, a lot of bonus money is tied to this completely idiotic system.

Finally, they tend to spring things on you without notice. For example, one of my former coworkers didn't know he was being fired until that very day.

Reorgs are pretty frequent. Heavy workload. Limited opportunities to change organization.
