I have been working at Statoil full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to hide while waiting on prices to come back. They have good CVX operated projects which is the only real projects they gave in GOM.

    Cons

I have watched this company since the purchase of hydro. They force the US employees to conform to the Norwegian socialist norms. There sop is to act like they are accomplishing goals with no actual results.

    Advice to Management

    The real world is coming.

I have been working at Statoil full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good, but not great. That is to say they are average when compared to peers.
Great people abound. The values of this company are OPEN, CARING, COURAGEOUS, and HANDS ON.

    Cons

The values are actually upheld only to the benefit of the company, CARING is only to care for the company, and to work employees to the point of despair and the employee gets a 10 mile stare. OPEN is used by supervisors in the system of People at Statoil, making goals to improve the reported impressions employees so that it appears that supervisors are performing well. COURAGEOUS, is the employee's mandate to survive in the self serving environment of supervisors. HANDS ON is the process used for laying off experienced employees in favor of those employees that speak the right catch phrases or words but do not have the knowledge or skills necessary. HANDS ON is the process where management is given the power to promise what it can NOT achieve and how the goal is rewritten to make success while driving good employees to despair or leaving the company.

    Advice to Management

Use a common dictionary to find out what the four values mean and DO NOT use the antonyms

    Pros

    Great company and great benefits!

    Cons

Just when you think management is bad, think again because management won't stay away from surprising you that it can get worst. GBS is full of horrible leaders and advisors. Not knowing what is going on and easy to blame others. People either have cheated their way up to leadership or they must be super lucky to get what they don't deserve.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of whole GBS management team. They are not just bad apples, they are rotten apples.

I have been working at Statoil full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent company overall. I find the management to have a very good attitude. One of their stated goals is to be "humble". Both myself (20+ years) and a colleague of mine (30+ years) in the industry are amazed to hear such an admirable goal for management. I like how friendly everyone is, including management. I have worked at another very good major oil company and the atmosphere at Statoil is even better.

I really like how Statoil has hired senior staff with many years of experience from all the major oil companies. It really leads to diversity of thought in problem solving.

I find everyone to be friendly and wanting to be helpful.

    Cons

No many - It is a very lean exploration organization and thus has not been able to do the massive amount of background science in US and GoM that other majors have done with huge staff numbers over the last 30 years. So playing a bit of "catch up"

    Advice to Management

Stay the course. You are very sensible and pragmatic. You are easier to work with than the management at my previous employer which is another major oil company.

    "Greenest" of the petroleum industry

Very difficult to reward good performance

I have been working at Statoil full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Few unfortunately. If you are 'average' and Norwegian, this is probably a good fit but not recommended for high caliber folks from other countries. Good vacation packages, especially on the Norwegian side of the house where it seems employees are on perpetual vacation or holiday. Friendly people throughout organization.

    Cons

Most management is lower caliber than in comparable size organizations in the US. US employees are third class citizens - heavy Norwegian bias persists in almost every aspect of the job, very few opportunities, low stability for an organization of its size, very few self-motivated individuals, low morale - especially in US.

    Advice to Management

US employees are treated like third class citizens. Bureaucracy is among worst of any large organization.

I have been working at Statoil full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefit. Ok salary. Work life balance except for quarter close

    Cons

Terrible management. No processes. No one knows anything. I regretted accepting this offer over others. Company uses SAP but system isn't functioning at utmost best. The blame game company. Finger pointing. Great employees hired lately but poor management and no system makes it hard to function. I wish to leave soon. Everyone is waiting for Oil price to go up and leave. High TurnOver. Not a company to be. It's a terrible work environment

    Advice to Management

Change all management and stop changing staff. Management are not qualified and don't know what they doing.

    Pros

    Benefits package is good.

    Cons

GBS leaders, some not all are just downright horrible. It's obvious that they got the jobs by default. The employee morale is low. Zero respect from management. They abosolutely do not live by the core values

    Advice to Management

Hire EXPERIENCED and QUALIFIED managers. Don't promote just cause they've been with the company and are very technical. Management skills and training are a must!

I have been working at Statoil full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work/life balance, some processes actually seem to work (annual reviews), benefits good. The old EVP was very personable and approachable and really cared about people.

    Cons

When I first joined this company a few years ago we all commented on how wonderful it was. Then things started to change. Incompetent management at the upper level is the main cause. Statoil pays lip service to values but there's no visible commitment. Personnel is on another planet. Mid management seem OK but upper seems to have no direction. There exist processes about processes, and it's hard to get anything done. The re-org has been handled terribly, it took too long and now the onshore team is being moved. Family values? Don't make me laugh!

    Advice to Management

Live the values, recognize people who deliver, get rid of management who are out of their depth and work out who is not contributing. Decent management can see this but some have been promoted into areas where they can't cope. PowerPoint skills do not make good mangers!
