Overall great seasonal job, management could use improvement though
May 24, 2023 - Server/Bartender in Steamboat Springs, CORecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
For the most part, I loved working for Steamboat Ski Resort. I worked as a server/bartender for the 22/23 winter season, and spent time working in all 3 of the on-mountain lodges. I also lived in the Ponds (one of their employee housing options) for the season. Great work environment. I can only speak for Food and Beverage, but honestly, the people I worked with became some of my closest friends. Shift meals provided for Food and Bev employees. This was an amazing perk, especially since I was working 5-6 days/week and multiple jobs (day and night shifts). I only had to grocery shop a handful of times throughout the season, as most of my meals were provided to me at work. The work itself is relatively easy. Busy work environment for sure but not crazy chaotic or stressful. If you're working Food and Bev on the mountain the workdays are usually 6-8 hours depending on your job. Most jobs (other than night jobs) are done by like 3-4pm so you have the whole night to hang out with friends or go into town which is nice. One of my favorite parts of the job: riding to work!!! If you work at Rendezvous Lodge or Four Points Lodge, you literally get to ski/snowboard to work every day. If you aren't a confident skier, they have a snowcat that brings people to both lodges every morning so you can still work at either place. Another perk is the access to Pro Deals and discounts on retail items at Steamboat Sports stores. And finally, the biggest Pro of the job (in my opinion) is a FREE SKI PASS! The Alterra pass you get for working at the resort is GOLD. You get unlimited skiing at any Alterra Resort, plus the mountain participates in the Colorado Real Deal program so you can ski any other Colorado mountain (other than Vail) for free as well! All you have to do is go to HR and fill out a little paper. This season alone I got to ski Aspen, A-basin, and Copper multiple times. Finally, another huge pro to working at Steamboat is their employee housing. I think compared to a lot of other resorts, they have a pretty solid employee housing program. They have The Ponds, which are individual apartment units with 4, 5, and 6 person apartments that have a kitchen and living room. They also have Storm Peak Apartments (the old Fairfield hotel) which is a hotel room style apartment with one other roommate. All options are pretty reasonably priced, you certainly won't find anything cheaper in town.
Cons
*I want to point out that I worked in Food and; Beverage this season, so I can only attest to the pros/cons of that department.* Management could improve a bit, I found some of the higher-up managers to be rude and power-hungry. I went to some of them with genuine concerns throughout the season, and not only did they not seem to care, but they were very cold and rude to me about it. At the end of the day, there's only one thing the resort really cares about and that's making money. To be expected for any large business, but still sucked at times. They love to preach that they care about their employees and customers, but in reality, as long as they are making money that's all that matters. Beware that they will probably not give you paid sick days, even though they claim employees are entitled to 2 each season. I had many friends and coworkers who were sick throughout the season and tried to claim their paid sick days; never happened. They'd reach out to management multiple times about it and got no response/help. Managers didn't care one bit. This is not so much a con about the job itself but the resort as a whole: they are dumping money into all these new projects without addressing the already existing problems they have right now. In terms of on-mountain Food and Bev operations, all three of the lodges are extremely old, Rendezvous and Thunderhead specifically. Both buildings can hardly handle the current crowds they get. Throughout the season, there were multiple sewage issues, pipe leaks (and bursts), mechanical issues, and even safety issues (like the elevator breaking with an employee in it); none of which were ever properly resolved. Not to mention that all three of the lodges struggled with staffing, but employee housing was completely full so it was almost impossible to hire more people. Instead of putting money towards resolving these issues, the mountain is trying to build a new gondola that will only bring more people to these areas of the mountain. They are putting tons of money into renovating the base area as well; they just built the ice rink this year and now they're building a new food court or something. It's frustrating that they seem to have unlimited funds for these projects, yet not enough money to renovate and fix the existing infrastructure.

Big company losing sight of what matters
Mar 27, 2023 - Ski PatrollerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great snow quality and some good terrain.
Cons
Alterra only sees Steamboat from a real estate investment company's perspective. They don't care about skiing anymore, only monetizing every last little detail. Steamboat resort is slipping into an impersonal and cookie cutter identity.

Jan 18, 2023 - Certified Ski Instructor in Steamboat Springs, CORecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Instructing can be very rewarding, opportunities to get lucrative private lessons. Pay increases as you get various certifications. Incremental pay increases every 70 hours spent instructing. Supervisors are great, hard not to get along with coworkers. Excellent paid new-hire training.
Cons
Work is not guaranteed even as full time hire; during slow points in the season, work is dependent on current sales/demand for lessons.
