    Pros

Pay and did I mention pay?

    Cons

Poor moral.. Not many people give to craps about the mill anymore.. work our buts off to achive new tonage records year after year and what we get for a company with a billion in liquid cash? Some of the worst health care insurance in the county.

    Advice to Management

Dont do a employee survey and then state that you think the outcome is scewed

I have been working at Steel Dynamics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent salary and benifits, great co-workers

    Cons

Difficult to obtain promotions. Must be in the "In Club" to move up. Innovation and going the extra mile not appreciated by management. Absolutely no cultural diversity.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to get its finger on the pulse of the people in the mills and address the issued described in the employee survey. Company is rapidly slipping from great to mediocre.

I worked at Steel Dynamics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Worked in MN at the nugget plant. pay and benefits were good but unless you were on days the rotating 12s got old. Really enjoyed everyone that worked there it felt more like a family than just a bunch of people you were forced to suffer through shifts with.

    Cons

12 hr shifts, production based pay, vacation coverage, and some of the supervisors constant micromanaging

    Advice to Management

stop the micromanaging and let the people you promote do the job you gave them and take a persons skills, drive, and abilities into consideration for promotions instead of just considering how much of their lives they contribute to the company.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Steel Dynamics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    -Nice people
-Average Steel Mill pay (dangerous work = pay above the national average)

    Cons

    - Extremely terrible business politics: Too much " who you know " relationships. Management blames others for their mistakes.

    - No room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Stop the business politics. If you truly want Steel Dynamics to grow focus on the logic and knowledge of the people for advancement, not who you are friends with. The "good ole boy" system keeps the knowledgeable people from advancing and less knowledgeable people keeps Steel Dynamics Inc. in the bottom half of the fortune 500. Create "real" opportunities for those that make "real" effort.

I have been working at Steel Dynamics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great through this company. From the stock compensation, insurance, 401K match, and pay.

    Cons

Where to begin... this particular division is structurally unsound. We continue to hire metallurgist to manage when they lack the managerial skills necessary to help us excel as a firm. There is no feedback for employees to inform them how to better their over-all performance. This would allow them to make themselves promotable and beneficial to the processes of the company. The "Good Ol' Boy System", has led this division to having several individuals in positions they're not qualified for or deserving. Inadequate performance often leads to a promotion or lateral move. Superiors take it upon themselves to make changes in the processes without discussing with those interacting with equipment or operating procedures on a day to day basis. COMMUNICATION- it doesn't exist.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend becoming more structured and abiding by it, any situation with every employee. The promotional process takes to long. Once a job has been given, set a time for movement of that employee and stick to it. Be consistent, 6-8 months is to long. Provide feedback.

    Pros

Good ins.package.Money is good.Great at updating old equipment!

    Cons

S.D. is a new comer, working in some cases with VERY old equipment. Don't tell the old guys how to.

    Advice to Management

Stop swinging people every 8 days if safty is such a big deal! Research the damage this dose!
