I have been working at Stein Mart full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great upper management communications, great sales and promotions every week, great product at discount price that others don’t offer, fun environment to work in.

    Cons

Staffing is hard in local area for all retailers so fill the same struggles of finding qualified, customer driven co workers. payroll challenge, but is at all retailers so not surprising.

    Advice to Management

I am very happy with my job. I do not agree with the negative statements given that there are too much workload or too much sales sign setting. Try doing it at sears or Kohls. They do it every day! We set floor once a month and put out truck 2 a week with with markdowns and ad sets throughout different times to compete with other sales. With coupons honored to elite members and to others who can’t find theirs should not be an issue. Those who complain should not work retail. I have worked retail for over 18 years and this is by far the best company I have ever worked for. Love stein mart as a customer and as a employee.

I worked at Stein Mart full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great group of people very hard-working

    Cons

Stein Mart is a good company to work for but unfortunately with all the cutbacks every associate is required to do multiple jobs. Great group of people very hard work but.... There’s only so much one person can do!

I worked at Stein Mart full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Former District Directors were great leaders.

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations of credit card enrollment and floor sets, with little to no payroll to support.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep daily floor standards and encourage your associates. They are underpaid for all of the tasks that they are asked to execute.

I worked at Stein Mart full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Nice merchandise, selection and products at great off price prices and value to customer.

    Cons

Extremely ineffective and poor upper management. Sadly Stein Mart used to be a decent place to work but as a company they are struggling and they treat their employees horribly. Most upper management especially District Directors are so unprofessional and have so much favoritism even if you do a fantastic job if they don’t like you you basically get screwed at some point no matter how hard you work. The Regional Vice President’s set the tone for the stores and they get upset at the most insignificant things and then form an opinion of an individual over something completely ridulous and your basically doomed from that point on. Everyone runs around in panic mode most of the time because business is bad and upper management can’t make a decision and stick with it. I could go on and on but the bottom line is Stein Mart treats their people so badly it’s like being in an abusive relationship and nothing is ever right or good enough. Upper management is so busy covering their own behinds and think nothing of backstabbing anyone that gets in their way. It’s so sad because the Merchandise is nice but not so nice to overcome the terrible working environment and management.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your managers a little and form your own individual opinions instead of believing idle gossip and hear say. Say “thank you” every now and then and mean it. Be genuine and quit being condendsending and be-little people there are so many who work so hard show a little appreciation and mean it not just say it because that’s what corporate said to do. Your only as good as the people below you instead of focusing on their weaknesses why don’t you try to focus on their strengths and develop the weaknesses instead. People appreciate honestly, integrity, fairness and being treated like a human being none of which Stein Mart does or believes in.

I worked at Stein Mart full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Weekly paycheck and a small discount.

    Cons

The focus too much on credit cards if you don’t meet goal you get blamed for not making sure they don’t care about sales they only care about credit. Everything is so outdated, management is not the best.

    Going to retire

I worked at Stein Mart full-time for more than a year

    Pros

can pick up new skills. A challenge to yourself and your sanity.

    Cons

Direction of the company. Coupons that change every 3 days. Unnecessarily sales that take up everyone's time in signs changeing and opening up space for those items. Bad coordination of tasks and directives from corporate. Directives change. The CEO needs to move the company to the new generation and direction rather than sticking with coupons! They like the store to look junky and messy.
