I have been working at Stein Mart part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

25% employee discount When they remember (or corporate makes them remember), they have occasional parties for the employees which can be fun

    Cons

Favorites are given higher pay, better hours, and other bonuses. They only give you bonuses and pay raises if you get the most credit cards from customers. The managers are promoted based on availability not actual skills for being a manager, so I have never had a good manager that knew how to manage people. I could go on and on..

    Advice to Management

Stop the favoritism. Promote the people that actually work hard, not just the suck ups.

I worked at Stein Mart full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Loyalty is valued. Targeted for certain demographic market. Brand recognition. Great sales. Employees are able to get merchandise from various stores.

    Cons

Very low wages. Long hours. Mediocre products. No real incentives to sale credit cards. Not for a person with adult type bills and living expenses.

    Advice to Management

    Less scattered tasks.

    I worked at Stein Mart

    Pros

Benefits, internal promotions, quarter department training.

    Cons

Store Managers and Assistants will work more than 40 hours. The work to personal life ratio is not great but if you hire a good staff it can be better. The push to sell credit cards is overwhelming and frustrating.

I worked at Stein Mart part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great co-workers Relaxed dress code- black jeans okay for female employees, sorry boys! Okay hours, average 20-22 It's easy to talk to management, you see them every time you work.

    Cons

Everything is centered on getting credit cards Work load is a lot, when management doesn't schedule enough people. There is no cleaning crew, so associates vacuum, clean RR, swept fitting rooms, etc. luckily our store did have a person come clean the RR every now and then. You will work almost every Friday and Saturday night as a part-timer Open on Thanksgiving 5-10pm, which I hated and part of the reason I quit. It is volunteering, but if there isn't enough sign ups, management will assign someone.

    "Easy and Enjoyable"

I have been working at Stein Mart part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Your fellow employees can make the experience more pleasant and fun. Cashiering is easy once you've become comfortable with it and the whole coupon situation. You usually get a 25% discount, and sometimes 30%. You are able to earn extra money on occasions for more credit card applications. The workplace is professional and always clean and presentable.

    Cons

The pressure for getting credit card applications and the disappointment in yourself when you're unable to get one all day. The coupons and employee discounts can get confusing, especially when no one tells you the proper way to execute them. I'm still hesitant to do transactions for employees. It can get incredibly slow and you'll have to create or find ways to keep yourself busy.

    Advice to Management

Train your employees properly and completely. Don't expect your employees to know everything about working as soon as they start. Act professionally, stop being passive aggressive and give helpful constructive criticism.

I have been working at Stein Mart

    Pros

Operating hours are easy compared to other retailers, benefits are available for full time employees, sick time is accumulative, pay periods are weekly which is great.

    Cons

High turnovers especially during the holidays, low pay, you're given a heavy workload with sometimes no additional help, the company is very slow to respond to requests for building maintenance done on the store and it seems to be based on how much revenue the individual store does. Managers are divided into two categories Store manger/operations managers which are salary based and Merchandise managers which are hourly based but still do not receive overtime in the sense that you don't make time and a half over 40 hours worked. They also don't pay any bonus or give any other incentives , even on the credit card program which they insist that you tirelessly promote for them. They don't back their employees up when it comes to complaints but would rather reward customers for bad behavior because "They don't want to hear it"

I worked at Stein Mart full-time

    Pros

Only pro is some of the people I worked with and the pay is decent

    Cons

Work like a dog to not be appreciated, they don't care about you, only credit and sales. If your not getting credit cards and sales they will fire. Their markdowns and sales change so much, topped on with freight, map changes every month, additions and keeping an eye out for theft - it's impossible to feel accomplished and proud. Forget you Stein mart, GOOD RIDDANCE and good luck!

    Advice to Management

Get on the same page so the left hand is working with the right hand. Quit making things so difficult, simplify for your customers. Care about your people who work hard for you.

I worked at Stein Mart part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Friendly employees and decent employee discount 25% and sometimes 35% 3x a year and don't be cheap buy a real Working Vacuum to clean the store

    Cons

Get more employees/payroll don't have 1 person doing all the truck by there selfs and stocking it out and Pay is terrible you basically stick with the pay you got and over a year of hard work you mostly likely get a 10 cent raise that's to me is a spit to the face and no way for growth as being manager either as well Terrible management force to sell stein Mart credit card/save a additional 10% off and literally get train to ask them 3 times per customer it's ridiculous and only for the managers and district managers to get bonuses through there salary and if you don't sell any as a cashier they cut your hours that's just cold blooded and they ask you to do the most ridiculous task that not in your job title that you applied for

I worked at Stein Mart part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    good coworkers. Fairly easy job.

    Cons

Must work weekends. Have to work holidays. The store really pressures employees to get customers to apply for the store credit card.

    Advice to Management

Stop pressuring stores to sell credit so much.

I have been working at Stein Mart full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The hours by retail standards aren't bad. The store is normally open 10-9 and even during the holidays the hours are extended only slightly. The 25% discount is good especially when there is a great sale.

    Cons

Senior mgt has no empathy! They continuously cut payroll hours but expect the same amount of work to get done. There are at times 2 different sales to set a week which islmost impossible and on top of that you have to maintain fitting rooms and clean the dept. If you don't sign customers up for a Stein Mart credit card your job is threatened

    Advice to Management

Communicate and get out on the floor and help if you are going to keep cutting payroll!
