I have been working at Steven Winter Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great culture, great environment, great career growth for sustainability consultants and the like

    Cons

Low-end pay, any other position looking for career growth (look elsewhere.) depends on age instead of experience when advancing you to the next level of where you should be

    Advice to Management

    Look more at experience

    Pros

Fantastic work environment. I was trained up well, I see potential for growth. Very bright coworkers, and expectations are what I would expect from any engineering firm. Diligence, willingness to learn, and living what you do makes this job easy and exciting.

    Cons

    I don't really have any.

    Pros

Lots of really brilliant people work here, the talent pool is fantastic. The company gets awarded interesting projects and does a good job of getting younger staff involved in those research projects.

    Cons

Little room for growth, and no formal training. Some supervisors have a sink-or-swim mentality, others are much better about training new employees - which one you get is really a crap shoot.

    Advice to Management

Create a career path for employees and clean up the disorganized project management.

    Pros

Conveniently located in Washington DC (rare since most engineering firms are outside the city)
    Nice office space

    Cons

    Toxic work environment
Passive aggressive managers who would talk bad about employees well within earshot
Constant internal bickering and resentment towards SWA CT and NYC offices. Unprofessional behavior from managers during conference calls
    Low pay, below average PTO

    Advice to Management

New management with a fresh perspective in the DC office
Do something to build a better sense of unity and teamwork

    Pros

Good easy going company with ample opportunities to mingle with your peer group. People are great and very helpful in all aspects. You can work here a long time if you are comfortable. Also easy with flex hours and home office when needed.

    Cons

Pressure to constantly bring business, remain billable and show profits is a lot. But that's the nature of the business. Benefits are ok, especially maternity leave is non-paid.

    Pros

Perfect environment for self motivated individuals who don't need to be micro-managed.You set the boundaries to what you want to learn and accomplish. The breadth of knowledge about energy efficiency across all sectors of the building industry is unsurpassed. More smart people in this firm than I have met my whole life.

    Cons

Various passing fads in the energy field mean that what you were inundated with yesterday may not be what you will be working on tomorrow. The ability to learn new skills is often necessary. For those who don't mind change this is no big deal, but if you want to work on the same efficiency program for the rest of your life, that is not a likely scenario here.

    Advice to Management

Keep fostering education for those who want to learn new skills. It keeps us interested and motivated.
