I worked at Stifel Financial full-time

    Pros

    1. Great Work Life Balance
    2. Great Back Office and Mid Western Cultural Roots
    3. Trying to Compete like an upper Middle Market on total comp (bases at Assoc/VP below the Street)
    4. Lean deal teams allow good MD-Execution Team work

    Cons

    1. Poor Sr Mgmt - operates like the "Articles of Confederation" with de-centralized power from each roll up and no control to enforce the agenda and conflicts
    2. Commitment Committee is needlessly long due to the Chairman: older and close to retirement
    3. old BoA Mgmt have created an arbitrary and capricious compensation system that "shaves off" and puts both aggressive cost savings and discretionary revenue (MDs earn 10-15% of gross revenue for example and they pay early March to typically go one notch below the Street) into their own pockets
    4. Promotes a mediocre "C-team" culture of politics vs. revenue generation/strong deal teams
    5. Overall choose to work for good people within your day to day teams but overall operations/compensation needs to be revamped from the top down

"Demoralizing, Disorganized and No appreciation for good employees"

    Pros

....never a shortage of work? Some of the technology isn't horrible compared to other places and the phones are nice.

    Cons

I won't be able to name them all but I'll do my best.

The health insurance is a complete joke - it's almost not even worth having. The amount you pay out of pocket for every plan is astounding. This is clearly illustrative of the larger message which is that they generally don't care about their employees.

Basically no 401(k) match - not remotely competitive at all with any other financial institution.

The utter disfunction that comes from the top first and foremost - and then is carried on down to the rest of the firm by the small group of "advisors" who upper management surrounds themselves with. With the exception of a few, this small aforementioned group is just a bunch of brown nosers with no appreciation for practicality, rules, risk, reality, people skills - and limited experience. The only concern is money.

There is no appreciation for anyone who is smart, driven, thoughtful and knows their stuff, nor for truly good, hard work. It's hard to ever feel good after a day of working here because no one gives a rats ---that you worked hard or fixing a ton of things or making things better or potentially saved or earned them millions of dollars. They're "untouchable" Stifel and unless you get in line and start kissing up and having no opinion, then you have no place at the firm. They acquire all these firms but it's ONLY for assets - not for any fresh new take on something, and certainly not for any other outside opinions or new approaches to things. If you have a brain, great experience and work hard, run as fast as you can in the other direction because they won't appreciate you here - but they won't outright not appreciate you either - it will all be so amazingly passive aggressive that you won't even know what hit you when you realize it. It's far and away been the most deflating experience I've had in my many years in finance.

It's a firm based on exceptions, barely held together by layers of old rotting cr@p. I'm in disbelief every day that it still exists.

    Advice to Management

This would be a waste of time.

I worked at Stifel Financial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people in my department were great to work with as well as surrounding departments. People generally wanted to help the company succeed

    Cons

Lack of leadership, was way too political. Very few chances for advancement which seemed to rely more on who you know rather than your talent.

    Advice to Management

Have a defined direction and stick to it. Often I felt as though the company had ADD and projects were dropped or picked up with no reason
