    Pros

For the most part, nice folks working there, sport staff is collaborative in its efforts.

    Cons

    - Environment full of toxicity
    - Very authoritarian management style - our way or the highway
    - Empty promises, misleading expectations
    - If you're not a lawyer there, you count for pretty much nothing
    - Keep far away if you want to maintain your sanity

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes very wide! There's a very good reason turnover is so high at Stikeman.

I worked at Stikeman Elliot full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You will work with smart people and learn a lot quickly. You will work on high profile matters (for Canada) and you might even get invited to a hockey game.

    Cons

Tries to be more of a New York-style firm than some New York firms are:
    - they hire a lot of juniors knowing full well they will get rid of most of them
    - the 1800-hour billable target is meaningless; they try to force much more
    - after 4 years, the managing partner still had no idea I worked there
    - a clique mentality; be friends with the right partner or your career will stall
    - management from the Jurassic age
    - frequently changed goalposts on job performance criteria

    Advice to Management

I won't bother giving advice to management as they couldn't care less what someone like me thinks; they figure that there is an infinite supply of new lawyers.

    Pros

They believe in Cultural diversity, and are supportive of different groups.

    Cons

Management doesn't care about their support staff, they just want it to appear like they do. Rather than looking at what is wrong, staff will be cut, when the issue isn't with the staff but managing expectations correctly.

    Advice to Management

Learn from Simon Sinek. Take care of your staff, so they can take care of your customers, both internal and external.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Stikeman Elliot (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good place to start your career, decent support structure and resources available. Decent pay, benefits, perks. It really could be a lot worse.

    Cons

If you have any ambition, turn around and walk the other way. No encouragement (well actually yes encouragement but only words, no action) to learn more, do more, try for advancement.
Been here almost 3 years, it's become a pretty toxic environment, there's camaraderie but not in a good way, more like a misery loves company way. Most people I interact with are pretty fed up.

    Advice to Management

If you treat us half as well as you treat your precious lawyers you're off to a good start. We may be the little guys but we see things and know things and it doesn't do you any favours to make us feel inferior and worthless.
