  1. "overall a good employer"

    Pros

You received good benefits and PTO after a short while, most managers were very flexible with time off and if you needed to take care of any personal issues as long as you got your work done and met your numbers.

    Cons

Management wasn't cohesive every plant was different and there wasn't much room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Your company needs to have an overall plan and implement it, depending where in the country you worked for them depended on what approach was used.

I have been working at Stock Building Supply (More than a year)

    Pros

Job security is fairly steady with a steady paycheck. Hours are 7am-4pm for most employees (off an hour earlier than most people). Availability to work from home on occasion is nice (Sick, inclement weather). Most of the employees are nice people that genuinely want to do a good job. The co-workers are one of the best things about Stock.

    Cons

No room for career growth outside of a few positions at the store level. Outdated processes and computer system. No commission in a sales support role despite a "teamwork" environment. The salesman makes 100% of the commission. Lack of substantial annual raises even when the company is doing well or your performance is excellent. The money stays at the managerial level with quarterly/annual bonuses, etc. Health benefits have gotten progressively worse each year. Management does a poor job of communicating process changes with each other in their different aspects of the business, and their staff, making it difficult to manage the day to day business efficiently without confusion.

    Advice to Management

Open up new positions where needed and make people want to stay at Stock. Currently, there's not anything keeping people wanting to continue working here. There is no incentive to do more and go the extra mile (other than being a good employee and wanting to do a good job). Let all the sales employees make commission on the business that they help support and maintain. "Reward" the good employees with more than the "cost of living" raise. And if you're not going to do this, at least remember a person who feels appreciated will always do more than he/she is expected.

I worked at Stock Building Supply (More than 10 years)

    Pros

the pros of stock are the people you meet, I have meet a few good friends there. Vacation time is good. The benefits are average.

    Cons

To much stress. Boss doesn't care how they talk to employees. No way to advance were you start is were you stay.

    Advice to Management

Allows supervisors to down grade or talk down to people beneath them! No respect for the lower level workers. Only doesn't take time to appreciate the hard workers in the warehouse.

I worked at Stock Building Supply (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I Like the industry that this company was in, The people i worked with directly were friendly and always willing to help. They have access to great products and variety of construction solutions

    Cons

long hours for little pay. Not much Growth potential. Upper management looks at employees more as a number on an excel spreadsheet rather and actual person.

    Advice to Management

Learn to manage from the bottom up not a top down approach. Could improve on inter branch communications. And staffing facilities properly

I have been working at Stock Building Supply full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

lots of products to sell, well financed company, ability to manage your customer base without a great deal of supervision, great window showroom in a terrific location

    Cons

Operations has trouble executing logistics, inside sales support really needs to be given more training and responsibility to work directly with customers

    Advice to Management

Company needs to put more time and effort into hiring more experienced management at the branch level. Too often individuals are brought in and expected to learn on the job.

I worked at Stock Building Supply full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits if you're lucky enough to score a job. Women are finally being put into management positions. Relaxed dress code. Free food and coffee during lunch breaks.

    Cons

The men at the top have all the fun. The old timers in permanent positions have little incentive to work hard and it's difficult to get information from them. The CEO and his buddies roll in the office at 10 am and then go to the bar after work.

    Advice to Management

Stop ganging up on the women of this town. If you expect us to work hard for you then we expect the same standards in return.

I have been working at Stock Building Supply full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Definitely employee focused. Decent compensation for skilled employees. Aggressively building their brand within the Northern Virginia, DC Metro, and Western Maryland markets.

    Cons

Lack of structure and guidance. Alot of working parts that work great individually just need to reel in and be cohesive.
