Stony Brook is the home of the best ideas in medicine. All ideas, no action.

      Pros

Great pension, decent overall benefits package, and comprehensive, affordable health care. Very good staffing ratios, when compared to similar hospitals on Long Island. Given excellent resources (clinicians, educators, CNS) to perform your duties. Union protection.

      Cons

Sometimes difficult to get time off (depending where you work.) Union rules make it almost impossible to get rid of really bad employees. You have to pay for parking!

      Pros

Good for new grads to get the experience. Every other job will be than this one when you leave.

      Cons

The PAY is the lowest in long island. Resp therapist , RN's, Xray, will make $10K to $20K working elsewhere. The work loads are HEAVY. The unions SUCK. You pay to park your car. Prejudicial merit raises given to office pets. ALBANY screws with your benefits often.

      Pros

The opportunity to work with some excellent nurses who are either trapped here accruing years for their pension, or are acquiring experience for their resume before moving on to a more competently run, better paying institution.

      Cons

The absolute distain and disrespect that management has for staff. Lowest wages on Long Island, terrible staffing, dangerous work environment, complete lack of support from management. In addition, you are required to pay to park in a filthy, crumbling, dark, poorly lit, unsafe garage that has slabs of concrete falling from the ceiling.
