I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Average starting wage for the industry. Plenty of hours available. Overtime is available during busier times and inclement weather which causes more call outs. Labor laws in Massachusetts stores give those stores a higher than average starting pay due to a high minimum wage and also mandate time and a half pay on Sunday.

    Cons

The usual grocery store nonsense. It happens everywhere and Stop&Shop is no exception. The higher minimum wage in Massachusetts probably skews wage data higher for store positions.

The big issue I have is the refusal to promote part timers to full time who don't own their own car. They do this so that they can transfer full time clerks on a whim, but in a major metropolitan area like Boston, enough alternate transit options exist so this shouldn't always be the deal breaker that they make it out to be.

Also, in many areas, some stores are chronically short staffed due to lack of interested applicants and so management hires anyone who is the least bit competent. This generally isn't limited to Stop&Shop and also affects surrounding businesses in areas with that issue.

    Advice to Management

The training program for new hires looks to be a step in the right direction, although only time will tell. The only other thing I can think of is having managers take a few minutes while doing new hire paperwork and do a who's who of department level, store level, and regional level support and management.
