Dynamic fast-growing global digital business at the cutting-edge of tech, content and comms.

      Pros

      - There is a very upbeat, collaborative atmosphere inside the business. - Strong culture that promotes respect, fairness, trust and integrity. - Results orientated. - Teamwork and collaboration. - High employee engagement. - Staff actively encouraged to take responsibility and given ample support to flourish in their roles. - Great learning opportunities in tech, content, and communications. - Purpose. See recent articles about Storyful in The New Yorker (the midterms and misinformation) and other major media outlets. - Diversity. There is an equal number of female and male leaders. Females occupy influential positions at all levels of the organization. - Strong backing from parent company, News Corp, which allows the company to operate independently.

      Cons

      - The ever-changing digital world continues to throw up new challenges on a regular basis.

A company brimming with talent, ruined by poor management

      Feb 17, 2021 - Journalist

      Pros

Storyful is full of great, talented people who are passionate about their work and passing skills to others. Internships (no longer offered) were once extremely valuable to anyone wishing to enter the world of media. Working for Storyful gives people the opportunity to pick up a unique set of skills in online journalism that are becoming more relevant everyday.

      Cons

Upper management live in their own bubble and are often completely unaware of what the news team actually does on a daily basis. Editor in chief is one of the most impersonal, cold men I've ever met who has no understanding of the world the journalists live in (monitoring extremist movements etc). A number of times in the last few years, individuals have been let go with no prior warning, offices shut down overnight etc. The news team started hemorrhaging staff in 2019 and upper management did nothing as the most talented journalists in the company continued to leave. There is a distinct lack of vision or opportunities for progression and little to no want to change that.

      Pros

None! You get to walk into a republican building and might see Kelly Conway?

      Cons

These are power hungry, title hungry SAD people. They will not help your business and they don’t care about you. They will NOT help your career and this place is like working at a friends basement startup on your resume. Skip this if you can. And newscorp, we all know you have no morals, but this is a new low.

No Longer A Great Place To Work

Feb 5, 2020 - Journalist in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

The NYC office is centrally located, making commuting from almost anywhere fairly easy. That's really it.

      Cons

If you come to work here for any length of time, chances are you'll end up developing a form of stockholm syndrome. You'll be overworked, beaten down, and made to feel like less than, all while a select few "pets" cherry picked by exec-level leadership preach about how *GREAT* it is to work there. Ultimately, you'll end up distrusting not only your own value and skill level as a professional, but your grip on your ability to accurately assess whether a relationship (with your employer) is truly abusive or not. They regularly have made/still make employees who raise flags about morale and other work condition issues out to be the problems themselves, insisting there is no actual morale/culture problem, and then punishing whistle blowers by denying/ignoring PTO requests, placing them on baseless performance improvement plans, etc. It's all tactics to beat an employee into silence and submission. The days of a great start up/corporate hybrid culture are long gone -- as are those who championed it and tried to hang on to it for as long as they could -- as the C-Suite has become more and more aggressive in their campaign to stamp out any remnants of the Storyful days of old. Several former employees have changed fields altogether after leaving the company (whether of their own volition or as a result of "restructuring" - i.e. they wouldn't drink the koolaid and fall immediately into lockstep with whatever the C-Suite wanted) because of the scars and self-doubt created by this company. In addition, the company is continuing to hemorrhage talent and chooses not to nurture the hard workers they still have left (almost all of whom are actively looking for employment elsewhere as a result). They've rebranded/changed direction multiple times throughout the past several years, and still can't seem to find a winning or successful formula to propel the business forward. I would never come back to work here, or recommend it to a friend, and that's assuming that they're even still in business in 1-2 year's time (which I doubt they will be).

      Storyful Response

      Storyful

Thank you for your feedback. The environment you describe is in stark contrast to the culture we are trying to create at Storyful. There are always challenges growing a global business, particularly one that works at the cutting edge of digital media. We encourage all employees to discuss any concerns with their managers or with HR at any time.

One of the worst places I've ever worked

      Pros

The office is nice, I guess.

      Cons

      - This place is toxic because of elitist higher ups who have no business intellect. - They are sloppy, disorganized, and lack empathy. - If this place was worth anything, they wouldn't be hemorrhaging staff or scrambling for funding. - They use loopholes to avoid taking responsibility for their employees. - Overall a huge waste of time. It's unlikely these hacks are going to stay afloat for very long.

Once was a great place with a vision

      Pros

News Corp benefits . Nice office. Ability to maybe network into a WSJ or News Corp position which is likely what all senior leadership wants.

      Cons

Nepotism from leadership to hire Australian friends over talent . HR is not on your side. Promotions not based on merit. Once was a great place. Lost sight of who they were as a company, focused all attention on one new business area (basically one client) and neglected the one thing they did well, journalism. They have replaced most senior level jobs with Australian friends with very little experience. HR was not to be trusted and only there to protect the company. Ask 5 people what Storyful does and you’ll get 5 different answers.

A company that could be good but is instead falling apart

      Pros

A large international staff The chance to meet some talented, hardworking people (this does not apply to anyone in upper management)

      Cons

The company is hemmoraging staff at an absurd rate due to stress, bad budgeting and abysmal communication It is impossible to advance unless you curry favor with News Corp brass Those who do advance are ill-equipped for management roles and HR will handwave any complaints or concerns regarding these people Upper management is increasingly stocked with News Corp businessmen who are overpaid and do not understand the daily workflows of the teams responsible for the company's product There is a high possibility that the company will no longer exist in three to five years
