I have been working at Strategic Investment Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

With the firm at approx. 100 people, analysts are a core part to the firm and are treated as such. CIOs, Managing Directors, etc work with analysts closely, and analysts are encouraged to ask questions, voice opinions, and attend meetings. Analysts can work on a variety of projects, from asset-class specific projects and analysis to client presentations and research/modelling work, and this provides rich on-the-job training....

    Cons

As a smaller firm, there can be pressure on analysts to balance various roles simultaneously. However, the positive of this is that analysts are exposed to all the moving parts behind a busy and growing investment firm. Managers are also understanding of the full role of an analyst (having been analysts themselves), and are supportive.

    Advice to Management

Continue fostering analyst development by encouraging on-the-job training. Encourage analysts to reach out, and help those who might be starting out at a first job become comfortable with asking questions of senior and experienced managers.

    Pros

Fun analyst group Pretty office Free snacks and lacroix Extremely knowledgeable and friendly Managing Directors

    Cons

Analysts are managed in silos and will take the blunt of blame No actual investing work – lack of middle office and high analyst turnover means you will be doing performance valuations Technology so ancient Indiana Jones cant figure it out Little to no training, you are on your own Little to no career progression, no mention of plans past 3 year mark

    Advice to Management

Be honest with the job title and responsibilities Stop posting fake glassdoor reviews Address the high turnover

I worked at Strategic Investment Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Smart people at the top, CIOs and MDs of asset classes generally have exceptional technical knowledge Analysts are generally dope Free La Croix

    Cons

Middle Management is lacking in management and technical skills Valuation work is 75% of the job due to high turnover CIOs priority is clearly client aquisition and not analyst or company development

    Advice to Management

Train Middle Management or find replacements Recruit lower caliber analysts, this will result in lower turnover Do not use the analysts as messengers for problems higher up

I worked at Strategic Investment Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - More access to senior management than you would get at a big bank or consulting firm. - Responsibility for large institutional client accounts and access to some of the best known money managers in the world. - Exposure to various aspects of the investment management business and the ability to peruse opportunities that interest you. - Analysts finish the program with a strong base knowledge of investment and manager...

    Cons

    - 3 year analyst program where some of the reporting work becomes repetitive, although this improves over time. - Meaningful involvement for analysts can vary based on the who you work with at the senior level. - Initial analyst on boarding could be improved with simple changes such as starting everyone on the same date and more immediate responsibility. - Analyst is the liaison between the firm's departments and often...

    Advice to Management

    - While some senior management is very good at giving analysts the opportunity to be involved, some should be encouraged to reach out more. - Better communication between divisions at the firm. - Look to consistently hire a December graduate.

I have been working at Strategic Investment Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I have prior experience working in both large corporate environments and at a professional services firm and can confidently say that Strategic is a fantastic place to work on many levels: - Excellent reputation in the market. - History of innovation. - Strong client roster and highly client-centric culture. - Great work / life balance. - Smart coworkers. - Responsive and supportive senior management - easy...

    Cons

As with any smaller company, many things need to get done at all times, so it is easy to get pulled into many types of projects; however, my experience has been that management is both sensitive to this and supportive of employees who choose to take on new responsibilities.

    Advice to Management

    - Formalize employee coaching / enhance career planning.

I have been working at Strategic Investment Group full-time

    Pros

Good things - 1. Good 401k 2. Generally good camaraderie 3. Good work life balance 4. Flexible holidays 5. Easy access to senior people 6. The Analysts are generally smart and capable. However, some are under utilized.

    Cons

    1. Talent pipeline - non-existent. There is no training available to junior employees. It will give new employees the incentives to work harder if they have the opportunity to develop new skills and are rewarded for their skills and contributions. 2. Only few people in the company make the decisions. The rest grind to put out reports. While reports are important part of the process, at a certain point, it gets mind...

    Pros

    - Much of the rank and file are excellent colleagues - Good work/life balance - Free vending machines and coffee

    Cons

    - Misalignment of interests between ownership and firm. New ownership brought in outside management who appear to have prioritized short-term profits for owners over long-term best interests of clients and staff. - Senior investment staff have seen their focus diverted away from investing as they have been tasked with larger roles in marketing. Marketing has become the priority of new management. Despite this, new...

    Advice to Management

    - Provide greater career development opportunities and potential growth track. - Implement 360 review process or otherwise enable employees to provide feedback on their managers. - Encourage managers to provide transparency within departments. Upper management should offer greater transparency into firm's strategic picture. - Don't hire new analysts 'on contract'. This has undoubtedly attributed to turnover and loss...

I have been working at Strategic Investment Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Decent benefits and pay, attractive office and views

    Cons

Little to no defined career ladder, ambiguous assignments, tension between old process and newer ideas, pronounced lack of communication between departments as well as from management to rest of staff. Managers who are good at their own tasks, but terrible at managing teams. Original roots as a company that focused on diversity and inclusion, crumbling away, especially at the senior levels of management.

    Advice to Management

Add some transparency to decisions, develop staff, teach managers how to manage.

I have been working at Strategic Investment Group full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Encourages work-life balance. Positive, intelligent coworkers. Beautiful office. Some training and great benefits, decent pay.

    Cons

Disconnect and lack of communication within departments. A distinct line between new and veteran employees. Very little training for new employees and lack of set procedures. No career path to help you move to another position or to receive a promotion.

    Advice to Management

Create and set clear procedures for each department. Provide more than a few weeks worth of training for new employees. Provide incentives for telecommuting across the board. Sit with each employee to find out if he/she wants to move forward and find ways to help them do so.
