    Work hard, play hard!

    Pros

Smart and friendly colleagues, great pay and benefits, interesting projects ranging from 2020 strategies for entire countries to hands-on operational implementation of an IT strategy.

    Cons

Not as international as McKinsey, Bain & BCG. Cravath system makes the place competitive. Depending on the industry, you might be stuck with one long-term client, e.g. if you're in the telecommunications practice, you will likely work with STC in Saudi Arabia for a long time as it's their main client.

Challenging work, great people, and progress on figuring out the brand

    Feb 15, 2019 - Senior Associate

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Interesting projects, challenging work Strong training, apprenticeship model Opportunities to work and learn from lots of smart people, who are also fun to be around, even on intense projects Especially great for vertically alignment (senior leaders in your practice take ownership and enjoy having you on their team).

    Cons

Still figuring out the brand; this is a less of con I believe than the past. It seems like future leaders of the firm have committed to it If you don't like your choice of vertical, you need to build enough relationships to switch. (To me this is similar to any other firm if you start working closely with a particular team) Consulting hours / work life balance (this is what you sign up for)

Really smart people and great strategy shop

Mar 5, 2019 - Senior Associate in Washington, DC

    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Smart people -Interesting/challenging projects -Above industry average compensation The low Vault rankings aren't indicative of the great people and interesting projects at Strategy&. It's true the brand took a hit with the PwC acquisition which resulted in the loss of a lot of great Booz talent and company prestige. However, Strategy& still recruits top talent and works on top strategic engagements. It's a great place to learn the consulting toolkit and meet awesome people.

    Cons

-Limited exit opportunities -Poor work/life balance -Growing pains from acquisition -Lack of diversity I'm not sure the PwC acquisition has reached its full potential; in fact, it may have hurt more than it helped. During the buy and hold period, a lot of partners were bidding their time until they could cash out resulting in poor management and unnecessary burdens on associates/sr associates. However, a lot of those partners have since left which has improved the firm a bit. Nonetheless, prestige and reputation took a hit which makes the brand less valuable in the open market for exit opportunities. Also, poor work/life balance which is no different than other top strategy shops.

    Interesting work, excellent culture

    Pros

Steep Learning curve. Colleagues are some of the brightest minds in the industry, but are also personable, funny, and genuinely caring about team and individuals. Interesting projects with plenty of exposure.

    Cons

Same as every firm, work life balance. But have to say that Strategy& is probably the best in the industry in tackling this, and thanks to the Katzenbach center influencing evaluation and solutioning, we have a solid path on improvement

Sinking ship with zero talent management

    Jun 21, 2016 - Senior Associate
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - decent brand name (fast getting diluted) - competitive base pay - some interesting projects on the legacy Booz side

    Cons

    - selfish Partners, providing no guidance to junior staff - pathetic projects coming in from the legacy PwC side. It's a joke that they are supposed to be strategy projects. Most of them are glorified project management exercises. - cutthroat peers who will not blink once before throwing you under the bus. - utter lack of collaboration between the legacy PwC and Booz sides. The two teams treat each other like step-siblings. Joint staffing is a rarity.

Dilution of talent continues; Morale remains very low

Apr 11, 2017 - Senior Associate in Chicago, IL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

I've personally been staffed on very interesting projects - quintessential pure growth strategy projects. Of course, experiences may vary, so take mine as a single data point. It's generally well-known internally that Booz consultants get better projects than our peers at McKinsey and BCG. (Bain doesn't often even compete with us on strategy projects.) PwC, being so well-connected, has helped us land pretty big new clients as well. Believe it or not, a lot of senior management at Fortune 500 companies either aren't too concerned with or aren't aware of consulting brands. They're much more pragmatic, and won't choose somebody because of the name of the firm. (How else would there be a market for boutique firms?) Even though the BBA/MBA recruiting world thinks of "MBB" - probably solidified by Victor Cheng and Marc Cosentino - it's probably undeservedly so, and the post-consulting world seems to recognize that. I get plenty of head hunts, even as early as a few months into the job. I have no concerns whatsoever about my exit opportunities should I choose to leave one day.

    Cons

I'm aware of some Senior Associates who have been let go before even starting their first project. I think that's a very highly unethical employment practice. Morale has probably improved in the past year or two, but is still pretty low, and when anybody is on the beach for more than a week, they get really nervous. For Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers, this should never happen - it is completely out of their hands. There is absolutely no culture or firm identity anymore. The old Booz days had a much better office culture, and the integration of some PwC management consulting folks was definitely a mistake - they are obviously not capable of managing a strategy project, resulting in a greater burden placed on the rest of the team. I haven't had the pleasure of working with many good Managers, and many of those who are considered "good" by Partners and Directors are really only good at project administration (i.e. dealing with PwC's bureaucracy), but with no real ability to see the bigger picture or really drive the project forward. This is likely due to a lack of real mentorship, despite the "relationship partner" model.
