I worked at Stratos Genomics full-time

    Pros

I've read over the years a collection of reviews concerning the environment at Stratos that don't reflect favorably on it. Stratos is not for those with average intelligence or if of higher intelligence, those not seeking to expand their minds. I spent nine years at Stratos, and it's stunning how much I learned after exposure to Kokoris' mind. Mark is uniquely intelligent, a true genius. Many people seek out post-graduate...

I worked at Stratos Genomics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work space has great views of the sound.

    Cons

*Please note that employees at Stratos Genomics are actively encouraged, and at times required to share positive reviews and stories on social media. I would be cautious about the glowing reviews seen on Glassdoor* The term toxic environment is overused at times, but fits extremely well with the culture that has been implemented at Stratos Genomics: - Entire company is micromanaged by a single man, one who does not...

I have been working at Stratos Genomics full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company culture at Stratos Genomics is spectacular. And a lot of that is due to the friendly and knowledgeable staff. Mark Kokoris and upper management have thoughtfully and successfully selected a group of individuals that mesh well together, share the same hard-working values, and cultivate the high-energy work environment found at Stratos Genomics. We're all one big team, working towards the same overall goal,...

    Cons

Initially, the long hours take some adjustment. But soon you'll be wishing you had more time in the day for your exciting experiments. Also, there is the occasional time period where you will be doing production-oriented work rather than explorative science. Both are incredibly important to the success of the company however, and that makes it much easier to grind through.

    Advice to Management

Continue with what they are already doing well: Maintaining transparency, keeping an open mind to everyone's ideas, and recognizing and appropriately rewarding the hard work and bright ideas put in by employees.

I have been working at Stratos Genomics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-The science is really exciting! New experiments are being run all the time and the focus can change rapidly as results come in. When we get interesting data, it’s often “all hands on deck” so we can investigate quickly and thoroughly. Collaboration and teamwork are very encouraged and practiced everyday. -The company is full of fun, bright, highly driven individuals. I have met some of my best friends working at Stratos....

I worked at Stratos Genomics full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Stratos Genomics has a lot of smart, dedicated scientists working there doing interesting, fast-paced work. It's a good place to learn new skills and learn from others, especially if you're just starting out and have a lot of energy to devote to it for a year or two.

    Cons

The managers at Stratos Genomics foster a toxic culture. Their goal is to get as much work out of people as they can, pressuring people to work longer hours, take fewer breaks, and work more weekends than other biotech companies in the area do. On top of the long hours, they also gossip about their employees and ascribe the worst motivations onto others as they can. Stratos Genomics has very high turnover, and whenever...

    Advice to Management

Good people have options on where they work, and unless you want to only hire inexperienced, recent college graduates, you need to significantly change the way you do things. Your reputation in Seattle is very poor among scientists working at other biotech companies and unless you change your ways by, for instance, hiring a management firm to advise you, I can't imagine that you will be able to correct your bad working...

    Pros

They bump you up in pay fairly quickly. Full benefits. Bonus days off in the summer. An extremely caring, dedicated CEO. Large, open lab space. Beautiful view of the Sound. Stock shares. They're willing to train you up.

    Cons

The 55 hour work week. If you leave at 7pm you get made fun of because "You don't leave when you hear the 7pm alarm bell." It's not necessary for "real science" either. Work weeks end up being 60-65 hours. The amount of managers who talk behind people's backs. And it's the directors and VPs who do it. The pay is mediocre and down right terrible if you figure out your hourly rate. Depending on your position, they don't...

I have been working at Stratos Genomics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

My year at SG marks the greatest advancements in my scientific career. Managers and leaders at SG invest time and resources in the development of young scientists. Above and beyond standard technician training, the introduction experience at SG is a transformative process that teaches keen observation, scientific technique, and an fully engaged mindset. All of which are useful in science and life. For those keen on...

    Pros

Working at other places it always felt like things could be better. A place with clear goals and none of the BS that gets in the way. At Stratos Genomics, Mark Kokoris and the other managers encourage everyone to grow, contribute and have an impact regardless of their position. It’s not just lip service. I worked at Stratos Genomics

      Pros

Exciting, cutting edge science, plus some of the smartest, most enthusiastic people I've ever met. Company is small enough to have great agility when it comes to tackling new problems. Great place to get work experience before moving on.

      Cons

The hours aren't just long, they're super long. 11 hour days are required, but people frequently work longer than that (willingly, or because they are forced to). Company also is sometimes required to work on weekends. Managers sometimes resort to shaming and personal attacks instead of handling work problems in a professional way. Very high turnover (~25% per year) is likely due to office politics and the hours, not...

      Advice to Management

No more mandatory 11 hour work days. No more personal attacks on employees. Neither of these things is necessary. Stratos has the potential to be a truly great place to work, but employee burnout and turnover will remain high unless these problems are addressed.

I have been working at Stratos Genomics full-time for more than a year

        Pros

Everyone at the company is highly motivated and excited to be partaking in some aspect of the technology development. Overall it is a very young team, with many RAs hired directly out of bachelors or masters programs. These young researchers are very talented, and the environment here provides the support and opportunities to put them on an advanced track to grow as scientists. This is also true for scientist level researchers...

        Cons

The 11+ hour work days Mon - Fri take some adjusting to. There is some flexibility to accommodate doctor's appointments and after-work activities, but the expectation is that these hours are worked in and that you generally are on-site during the "SG standard" work day (8am - 7pm).

        Advice to Management

Additional schedule flexibility and perhaps a shorter Friday workday (ie. say till 5 pm) incorporated once in a while, especially before holiday weekends when many people are traveling.
