I have been working at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The interview for the Associate Teacher position was definitely different from you’re average one-on-one interviews you’d experience elsewhere. With that being said, the group-interview you experience here is awesome. It definitely makes you feel as if you can really be yourself. It’s also a super collaborative environment throughout the interview because you’re discussing SA’s values and the way they run with other candidates....

    Cons

At this time I don’t have any cons regarding the interview process. The Talent Management team did a great job hosting the interview and answering any questions I had throughout the process.

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pay and benefits solid for a first job. Loved working with kids. If you can stick out the abrasiveness, it pays bills.

    Cons

Poor professional development-- I observed about 7 times this year, each time being less than 10 minutes. Organization promotes a disciplinarian culture. People that rise to the top are consistently the most aggressive. As much as HR emphasizes "employees never yell at children," verbal abuse is the norm.

    Advice to Management

Create a school environment where teachers actually want to stay more than a year or two. Teachers need to be able to express concerns without fear of retaliation. Employees and children are not expendable resources.

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Students are great. Some teachers are great. Parents are great.

    Cons

Micromanagement. Taxes. Too many applications for communication, they should streamline. Need longer permits for office hours for students. Needs more opportunities for upward mobility. You have teachers that stunt other teachers' growth by telling them that they can't do anything innovative. So teacher's morale is bad. Gossip culture.

    Advice to Management

Make sure to expand as your school size increases and become more flexible to make your procedures evolve to support the needs of teachers and their scholars.

Thanks so much for your feedback and your commitment to kids! It is true that there is a lot to learn as a teacher — it is a highly-skilled and intellectual endeavor. With the supports that SA provides, the pace of improvement is rapid but it also takes years to truly master the art ...

I have been working at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for less than a year

    Pros

They really care about employee well-being. Very strong benefits package. Opportunities to advance quickly. Beautiful facilities. Good interview process.

    Cons

Salary is not up to par with regular public school entry-level salaries. Need to ask a lot of questions to learn a lot about positions and the make up of the schools... seems a little sneaky and vague from their side.

Thanks so much for your feedback and your dedication to scholars. Our salary for starting teachers is, in fact, competitive with district New York City schools and other charter school networks, and we offer a very generous benefits package. We also differ from district schools in ...

      Pros

Working with the children is challenging at first but then improves greatly once trust is established

      Cons

Horrible leadership, cliques, draconian oversight, no flexibility with hours

      Advice to Management

Invest in teachers with actual education experience instead of thinking "well, we can always just hire another fresh graduate and see how that works."

      Success Academy Charter Schools Response

      June 21, 2019Founder & CEO

Thanks for your feedback. What you perceived as “cliqueyness” is probably the very close friendships experienced by many of our school staff and that they often cite as one of the great benefits of working here. We’re sorry it was not a better fit for you and we urge teachers to speak ...

      Pros

...benefits? Cannot think of many pros to working here.

      Cons

60 hour weeks, no overtime, scripted and robotic, there’s bullying and threats, associate teachers are told to terrorize and yell at students, 6 am - 6pm work then you work hours over weekend to prepare. This place has made me and other teacher associates cry. Recent grads don’t do it.

      Advice to Management

End this terrible awful charter school. It’s bad for the kids, teachers, public schools. Also, Eva Moskowitz pays herself $500,000....

I’m sorry that Success Academy was not a good fit for you. Your claims are at odds with the truth. Yelling is prohibited at Success. We practice a “warm strict” approach to classroom management: corrections are delivered in a neutral, no-nonsense tone. We give our educators the training ...

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time

      Pros

The level of passion from fellow teachers is great. Students are often eager to learn. Good food catered.

      Cons

It's their way or the highway. And good luck striking a work-life balance. Very demanding with little time baked in the day to prep. Student treatment needs to be revisited. Needs more racial diversity-- how could you not realize the problems with banning headscarves (to name just one example)?

      Advice to Management

Teachers are spread way too thin between duties and lesson planning. The training felt less like a preparation for teaching, and more like a time to align teachers on their way of doing things. By the end of it, I was not confident in my ability to write a lesson. Restructure certain hierarchies-- content and classroom management ought not be separate.

        Cons

If the choice was to work here or not work at all I would choose not work at all (and work hard at finding something you love), I was hired as an Associate Teacher (AT) last Summer and went through a 3 week 'training' at both the Upper West Side and then the Robeson center near Port Authority. I actually applied and went through the process while other 'teachers' were recruited via LinkedIn. It was strange people...

We’re sorry you were unhappy at SA, but it’s not surprising from your comments. It sounds like a bad fit for you. You seem to look down on “hairdressers, grocery baggers and worked at CVS” as being “strange” and “a red flag” — whereas we have nothing but respect for those who have ...
