I have been working at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great team. Scholars are amazing. I love getting to know and speaking to the families. Everyone drives each other to be better and you really get a lot of support. You get a lot of vacation time - all school break holidays, except only 1 week off in summer, and another 12 days you can take whenever. I would definitely stay at this company if they paid me more, because I feel successful at my role and I really like the...

    Cons

Learning curve can be steep and it’s a really fast paced environment so many people get really discouraged and quit before they actually learn the role. This job really doesn’t pay enough for what you do - even as you go higher up in the organization. I currently make ~58,000 The pay seems really unfair. The pay was fine when I just graduated college, but now I feel like I actually need to start making real money! Lunch...

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great benefits, good time-off schedule, PTO for operations staff is generous, lots of "perks"

    Cons

Nonexistent of work/life balance, feeling of not being heard by local and network management, constant unrealistic and tone deaf demands trickle down from above, excessive adherence and devotion to hierarchical structure of organization, organization refuses to acknowledge high turnover issue and scapegoats its young employees (stating that they have a tendency to leave jobs frequently), constant scrutiny and evaluations...

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, empathize with individuals doing the groundwork when considering making changes or creating new processes, acknowledge that retention is a problem and ask employees how it can be fixed, trust your junior employees and cultivate their skills, deliver constructive feedback that actually helps schools improve and grow, and do not treat people as lesser simply because they are lower than you on the...

    Success Academy Charter Schools Response

    February 8, 2019Founder & CEO

Thanks for your feedback and very sorry you did not have a more positive experience. Building great schools is incredibly demanding. The reality is that any meaningful career at a high-performing organization will sometimes ask for more than a 40-hour work week. This is true in journalism, ...

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-schools are very clean and technologically advanced -staff got lots of basic incentives (apparel, snacks)

    Cons

-“gotcha” culture is very prevalent. You will get written up for anything and everything. There is never any room for error. -Do not expect to be praised for working hard. -A lot of favoritism and politics runs this place. School principals have absolute control over your fate -There is no union -Days are very long and you do not get compensated for overtime -very inexperienced management and teachers. Professional...

    Advice to Management

Please do yourselves a favor and revise your mission and vision. Running schools like corporations is inhumane. It’s concerning how when policies and situations make it to the media, the person in the role gets thrown under the bus and the situation gets covered up to protect the company. Just google “Candido Brown”. This man has a senior level position even after all the outrage surrounding what he did - which is enforce...

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-You are there for the kids and get to see them smile every day -I had some great coworkers that I still keep in touch with -As my first job out of college, I learned a lot that I can take with me in my career -Free snacks and lunches

    Cons

-They will work you until you drop. You are expected to be there from 7AM (often earlier, especially in the spring) until 5PM or later. And despite it being illegal, you will not get a lunch break. You are "chained to your desk" and it is impossible to leave the building if you want to get food. -Management will email, text, and call you all night long. And I literally mean all night- emails at 2AM, 3AM, 4AM. When your...

    Advice to Management

You will never be successful in employee retention if you do not emphasize work-life balance. 50 hour weeks plus emails/texts/calls all night makes it extremely easy to burn out. In addition, training principals and leadership staff to treat the staff with respect. It feels like we are just there to serve them and their crazy demands when they don't even have the decency to speak to their employees as human beings.

I have been working at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Success Academy provides all the tools necessary to excel at your job. The team that I work with on a daily basis is amazing and very supportive. From a corporate level, they offer tons of professional development and also fun and rewarding incentives throughout the year. I highly recommend Success Academy to all young professionals, no matter in which field you your expertise is in, there's a fit for you here.

    Cons

There are longer than usual work hours, but it doesn't necessarily always feel like a long day due to the nature of the job.

I have been working at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Working with kids was never something I thought I'd do - but working in the Operations team at a school has been incredibly rewarding and you see the impact you make on families and scholars every single day. Success rewards those who are top performers and who are dedicated to their mission and utilize a lot of performance metrics and evaluations and direct feedback to do that. There are so many opportunities for growth...

    Cons

Long hours, long days - we work long hours at the schools, but it's all worth it at the end of the day . The day generally flies by rather quickly as you are always working on something to get you through the day. The mornings are generally slower, but after lunch things kick up and the day ends fairly quick. Working at the schools gets you fairly less recognition if you don't work at the flagship Harlem 1. The other...
