I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You will become an incredible teacher. The PD is super high quality and you get very high level and frequent feedback. They have a ton of money and you have unlimited supplies, and the staff outings are fun. The teachers are also amazing and I made some of my closest friends there. When you leave, you can get a job anywhere.

    Cons

It's really, really hard. It feels like whatever you do is never good enough. The hours are long. Admin sometimes looks the other way or participates when teachers are mean to students.

      Cons

An unhealthy, NOT a “high”, bar. Orwellian management culture/style.

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

Lots of professional development and support. Great environment if your school leadership likes you, good potential to climb up the ranks. I'm not totally bought in by charter schools, but Success Academy really does change the trajectory of their students. Great benefits, good compensation for the field

        Cons

Incredibly intense work environment; difficult work-life balance, especially in the first year, but you get better at managing it and optimizing your time. If behavior management-style charter schools aren't for you, then this is a hard place to work. Testing grades (3rd, 6th, etc.) have a VERY tough time

        Advice to Management

Give more leeway to students and teachers to explore classroom techniques outside of behavior management; be more progressive around teaching methodology. Respect teachers more. I had an amazing time working here, but I saw a lot of peers treated extremely poorly.

Success provides teaching opportunities and training to people without formal education backgrounds. Training consists of formal summer training, weekly development sessions, and feedback from leaders and peers. Standards are high for both adults and children. Adults are expected to be prepared at a high level intellectually so that learning is maximized in the classroom. Kids are held to high academic and behavioral...

Lack of experienced teachers within most schools. Teacher development depends on the leader and is inconsistent among schools.
