I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Kids were truly incredible, opportunities to go on some really cool field trips, very flexible spending budget for classroom necessities, teaching experience without a degree

    Cons

Extremely intimidating approach from teachers to students and leadership to teachers, perfectionism culture, overly stressed teachers, students, leadership, no work-life balance

    Advice to Management

-Make time to really absorb feedback from the teachers, students, parents. -Slow down on the expansion. -Build in more time for freedom of expression, curiosity and all around free time so the kids have an outlet. -Build a mentorship program to help with retention for new teachers so they can become successful lead teachers.

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The ability to connect with the children was truly amazing. They are all unique and talented in their own individual ways and to be able to cultivate and contribute to their social and academic development is truly a rewarding experience.

    Cons

Where To Begin.. 1.) There is absolutely NO work life balance. Working here is committing yourself to LONG hours up 11hr work days, not accounting for the work you go home and have to do. 2.) NO Breaks. Your prep periods are used for work an meetings. If you are seen not working then it will be noted and later brought up to discredit your work ethic. Be prepared to eat and work, if you eat at all. 3.) No real support...

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for less than a year

    Pros

SA does offer a competitive salary, on site workout classes at the end of the day – in my opinion a tactic to keep you there longer--, and decent benefits while you’re there. They provide tons of snacks and food in the TWR. Does this outweigh the toxic mentality of SA, that’s up to you as a potential recruit to decide.

    Cons

Working at SA is a questionable experience. I do not advise that you be a mid-year hire at the schools. Unless you start in June/July, you’ll be relying on yourself to learn things, if you learn anything at all. The staff is extremely cliquey and catty. They gossip about parents and do not bother to consider the serious life issues most families have. As there is a great economic disparity between the faculty and the...

    Pros

Nice salary on paper, paid vacation (standard), Free laptop and phone stipend, Nice teachers who are young, eager, and fun to kick it with

    Cons

Workplace culture, $50k a year isn't worth 15 hour days with no overtime, Overall sense of dread among all employees, Could be fired at any moment (ranging from illness to not having student attention as one's principal enters the room), No work/life balance, No room for creativity or expression (both as a teacher or student) I remember having a parent take my hands in hers with tears in her eyes. Advice to Management

Let teachers teach and stop holding back students for a grade simply because they didn't score high enough on tests that get you bonuses. Also stop encouraging teachers to mentally and verbally abuse students for results and order through discipline. Also, ease back on the cult of Eva. The charter indoctrination is haunting.

    Pros

Down to earth coworkers and a great sense of community, especially when we all bonded over how people were leaving the organization in hoards

    Cons

-Directors and managers got promoted for other people's hard work -Did not reward those who deserved to be rewarded -Extremely low pay for how much work they expect from you -Little to no room for negotiation for pay - "take it or leave it" mindset -Repetitive work, employees never given the chance to do more and use their skills to their full potential -Attrition rate is alarmingly high, bringing down overall morale

    Advice to Management

Reward those who help you do the most work and be open-minded to feedback. There isn't just one way to do things - people are hired because they excel at what they do, so let them figure out better ways to improve the organization

I worked at Success Academy Charter Schools full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I was employed at the Network. On paper, SA has a great mission on paper -- I guess this is a pro? Many of the employees are brilliant. I know of a few people who have had the ability to take on roles in new departments or teams.

    Cons

There are so many terrible things happening "behind the scenes" that SA is not committed to the mission. I worked at SA's central Network office and was witness to some soul-crushing, unethical activities. Many of us were severely unpaid and overworked. While many teachers made a lot in comparison to DOE teachers, I watched as teachers worked 14-hour days. However, if you escalate your lack of work-life balance, SA...

    Pros

It’s a job with health insurance. I can’t deny that I have learned a lot. However, what I have gained is not worth all that I have lost. See cons.

    Cons

Returning teachers not valued. Expectations are not realistic. This company is a revolving door. Fresh blood in. Old blood out. You are as replaceable as paper. The adults you work with are far more stressful than the children. I have seen multiple teachers become chronically ill as a result of the demands of this job.
