Pros
Nice people, the company owner Steve Suddath and his sister Barb seem to genuinely care about and understand the company. When they were younger, they did various jobs average employees do and they really connect. Company culture varies widely from department to department, business-line to business line, and location to location. In general, the people there seem to care about each-other. Most departments try to make work fun and rewarding. If a position wasn't working out for someone, typically HR or department leaders were good about trying to find a better fit within the company and keeping good staff onboard if they wanted to stay and it was just not the best fit. Whenever there was an acquisition, Suddath managed to pretty much always keep all or most of the talent of the company/place being acquired. They do really great quality work and teach their employees how to do their jobs well. As a result, Suddath is one that other companies will often recruit from because these employees are generally some of if not the best in the industries.
Cons
Understaffed and overworked on many levels - from corporate to the branches and through many of the lines of business. They call themselves "a family," but after a few years, it felt like maybe that's because they actually take over your life -- the company literally becomes who employees always have to be around rather than their real families and friends. They try to make up for it with employee appreciation events, great holiday parties or things like surprise ice cream -- and they are genuinely there if someone faces a tough time, truyl...but looking back, sometimes I wonder if it bordered on being more of a trauma-bond thing rather than real healthy relationship bonds. Some departments/locations are healthy and fun, some are driven by fear of who "works hard" like a shame-driven competition. In my department, everyone worked through lunch and at one point I remember a coworker joking about how she'd altered her drinking and bathroom habits because she was afraid of getting overwhelmed if she was away from her desk too long because she had so much to do. I had unconsciously started to do the same. I felt guilty if I took a break to have lunch or work out at the company gym or do something healthy. But when I realized this, I began to do it anyway. This was, however, where I worked - the whole company isn't like this. It is said that the Suddath legal team had a reputation for intentionally building in healthy time during the workday, as a team, even though they fielded volumes of work from every line of business in the company. This culture seemed to come from their leader, but might have just been a special culture amongst employees. The IT team also seemed to have a really healthy culture and flexibility. In my department, professional development opportunities weren't always a guarantee. After years of being there, I began to see some patterns and became discouraged. It got me questioning what the actual career runway was in the company for someone like me.
