I have been working at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Omani people in general are very nice.
    Excellent country.

    Cons

    Extremely rigid committees.
Management in the Faculty of Engineering is not supportive at all.
The recruitment committees will always recruit at the lowest scale without paying respect to candidate's profile.
    No career prospects.
    Existing Professors are absolutely useless.
    No research agenda or plan.
If you want to waste your academic life and willing to retire as an Assistant Professor, this is the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Be realistic, specially when you recruit foreign faculty.
How come a local Omani fresh PhD graduate is equivalent in rank to someone with foreign excellent PhD, number of papers and years of experience?
Please remove useless top management in Research Department and most other full Professors who are bringing no value to the University. Why you having them?
Most faculty even Professors are publishing in crap journals to keep the counter incrementing. it is useless. Please recruit capable people from abroad, give them appropriate title and authority to bring about change.
It is perceived by the management that any person who has just got PhD from abroad is capable enough. In reality, if you get your PhD from UK/US you work as PhD STUDENT and you will be lucky to even speak with your supervisor in months time. For someone who is working as full time faculty in UK/US is not the same because they go through rigorous scrutiny before they are offered a permanent faculty position. Please don't equate someone who was PhD student and came back in comparison to someone who worked there as permanent faculty!!

    Pros

Most of these reviews are from staff working in the University (one of the Colleges) not the hospital. I don't understand why the general title for this employer is the hospital? It seems to be the default position too, I tried to write a review under 'Sultan Qaboos university' but 'hospital' kept appearing at the end. The hospital is only one part of the university, most staff work in one of the 9 Colleges.

    Cons

No bright outlook. Falling price of oil has meant many cuts.

    Pros

very pleasant work colleagues, amiable local staff in admin etc, very pleasant easy going students - the less you ask them to do, the happier they are! Oman is a very pleasant country.

    Cons

Very poor career development opportunities; top down admin, with consequent very low morale; expats get paid substantially less than local national faculty; plagiarism widespread; very weak intellectual stimulation; salary poor by gulf standard

    Advice to Management

Work environment is very demotivating. Honor the commitment to pay expats the same as local staff and you may improve morale. Institute a strict plagiarism policy. Match other Gulf salaries.
