I worked at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some flexibility, depends in which department you work. Promotion and internal transfers are pre planned . Diversity is an illusion.

    Cons

Pay is low, opportunity for advancement is only for the chosen few. I have witnessed senseless decisions made on the basis of gender and race , not Talent.

    Advice to Management

Have a plan for everyone , not just white women and men.

    Pros

Hours are manageable compared to most of Wall Street

    Cons

stuffy culture, 1990's looking office, no benefits, everything requires 10 approvals, no autonomy, no career development

I have been working at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pleasant general environment, friendly co-workers, good work-life balance depending on the department. This is what keeps a lot of people here. Good amount of vacation and sick time but not in 1 pool like most companies.

    Cons

Flexible work and location options like working remotely are very limited if an option at all. Lower salary and bonus than peer companies. Have an attitude of "well, this is the way it's done here, we're not like other companies" (not in a good way). There are no checks on unfair or abusive managers - HR only favors seniority. Open seating style is very challenging. Almost no opportunity for advancement, independent work, or travel.

    Advice to Management

Come into the 21st century with flexible schedules, technology, learning and travel.

I worked at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Well, I do not feel any good side of working here except I could gain more experience in my career path.

    Cons

Less authorities. While I was working there, I did not have authority on my work at all. I had to wait for the decision from management

    Cons

    everything else...
Low pay, difficult to move around the company, credit is more concerned with the margins rather then actual credit work

I worked at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The rates paid to contractors are very competitive. If you live in the Jersey City area, the location is convenient.

    Cons

Leadership is severely lacking. There is a complete disconnect between headquarters in Tokyo and the local office. Relationship skills are sorely lacking in management.

    Advice to Management

Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care. The culture in the company is barren. Get some leadership training. Don't use low level managers to handle long term employees that senior managers are afraid to deal with. The schism between the US-based employees and the Japan-based employees is enormous and totally counterproductive.
