    Pros

You get to design products and see them put into production. It's pretty amazing to see your work be designed and manufactured. The designers on the team have a great community and it feels like a family.

    Cons

Summer is structured by business unit and the designers are aligned to specific business units. They lost their head of design about 4 years and have struggled to find a new person to stay in that role. The reporting structure doesn't enable designers to be heard and prevents them from doing good work. Each business unit has a marketing person and a business unit leader, unfortunately across all teams these individuals have very little design experience yet they lead the product design for their groups. This is extremely frustrating and causes you to design a lot of products that already exist. Business unit leaders govern product design based on price and competition more than user needs and wants. Summer lacks any sort of design research they only bring users in at the end of the process to validate things already in production or to seed reviews. Although I think this is a great place for marketing and business roles, designers have little power in this organization. Some business Unit leaders act as dictators rather than partners and the result is poorly designed products which only sell due to cost and product placement.

    Advice to Management

Give the designers more of a voice. A strong leader who can advocate for good work or a seat at the senior table. They should be partners with business unit leaders and marketing not subordinates. Marketing should have a say in marketing and packaging but their place is not in product design.

I have been working at Summer Infant full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Family feel, really good people. Making products that help parents and babies is rewarding. Benefits keep getting better and better. Can wear jeans any day. Started with summer half day Fridays and now is year round. Just added time off for dads of new babies.

    Cons

Fast pace can be stressful and/or exciting. Summer has gone through a lot of change in the past few years. New CEO is experienced and grounded - this is not a con - feels like Summer is headed in a positive direction.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing - so far so good.

I have seen many changes, not all easy, but the company keeps getting stronger and healthier. Good Senior Leaders... good products... good benefits... fair pay. I like working for a company that makes products that benefit babies and parents. Love seeing our products on the shelf.

    Cons

Systems could be better. Training could be better.

    Advice to Management

Accelerate transition from entrepreneurial growth company to Consumer Packaged Goods powerhouse !

Great co-workers, small company feel, good growth opportunities

    Cons

Management routinely ran business into the ground despite the hard work and dedication from lower and middle management and staff, pay was lackluster, certain managers couldn't be bothered with suggestions for improvement

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees, you hire great talent and to ignore them in a shame

I worked at Summer Infant (More than a year)

    Pros

What a shame. Summer Infant has wonderful potential, and an incredible group of employees, but It can't seem to get out of it's own way. Partially because of the highly competitive and quirky industry it is in and partially because it has an established hierarchy that is difficult to maneuver. The HR staff is amazing but is frustrated trying to band aid what remains. The company culture KNOWS there are better ways of doing things but can't seem to catch a break to hit the pause button long enough to seriously enact some of those processes. The result is a lot of running around chasing phantoms and employee burn out.

    Cons

Not thriving like it should be, more in survival mode keeping the ship upright, but ABSOLUTELY has the potential to do well.
Exceptionally smart Board but it is frustrated and weary.
You would think and company that has been around for a while with excellent buyer relationships would have certain "best practices in place...you would be wrong.

I worked at Summer Infant full-time

    Pros

Fellow colleagues are the only pros, the real "worker bees." They are smart, fun and caring.

    Cons

Executive team doesn't seem to care about the real people making this business run. It's the WORST place I've ever worked and it's a BABY product company. Middle managers are basically narcissists, micro-managers and don't give credit to the TEAM. They take all credit to themselves. Micro-management to the worst level. I can't believe these leaders are making BABY products! Do not go work here.

    Advice to Management

Wake up. You have leaders being completely rude and inappropriate to their staff. Look beyond those leaders who have been there because they were part of the "boys club."
