I have been working at Summit County Children Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working with clients and making a difference.

    Cons

Caseloads are unmanageable with an administration that has unrealistic expectations of workers. Administration has completely lost touch with reality when it comes to this job. Workers end up feeling like they are in a hole that they can't get out of. Administration perpetuates drama, alienating workers. Administration does not care about workers, we are seen as disposable.

    Advice to Management

Be realistic and stop acting like middle school kids with the clicky groups. Get out from behind your desk and do this job instead of micromanaging when you have no idea what the current intake role entails.

I worked at Summit County Children Services (More than a year)

    Pros

There is such a great support system at this agency and the pay and benifits are awesome.

    Cons

There are a lot of politics and drama that stems from upper management including HR at this job. The agency is on a downward spiral.

    Advice to Management

There are some great supervisors and some not so great supervisors. If you have a supervisor who really cares about you then it will show. There is also not enough diversity when it comes to supervisors in any of the deparments.

    Pros

Benefits package is amazing, along with the vacation time you acquire over time. Great learning experience, and it gives you great hands on experience.

    Cons

Morale is low, and unless you're blessed with an awesome supervisor there's no support from upper management. Don't get paid well enough for what we do.

    Pros

The kids. They're the ONLY reason to take this job on.

    Cons

HORRIBLY managed and administrated. The administrators are a bunch of self-adoring, shallow narcissists. They can just barely muster up a shallow regard for the client families and children, and they so obviously resent and openly disrespect any of the line workers who genuinely give a damn.

Another HUGE problem: the agency too often forgets that it's a social service agency and too often acts like it's a public law firm. It's so consumed with risk aversion and limiting liability that it doesnt have time to concern itself with professional conduct becoming that of management-level social workers

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to be JDs and start acting like MSWs!

    Pros

Agency does great work for families. Many opportunities for career enrichment, training, variety and advancement.

    Cons

Because it's government, some employees have an attitude of entitlement

    Advice to Management

Hold staff accountable for "great" work. The families served need it and depend on it.

    Pros

The company's primary function of protecting and helping children affected by abuse and neglect is a very worthwhile one.

    Cons

For front-line social workers burnout is a major concern due to the difficult child abuse and neglect cases dealt with day-in and day-out.

    Advice to Management

Continue to work on developing a consistently positive corporate culture.
