I worked at Sun Chemical as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent place to have a first internship. They have an established internship program, and you're soon matched with a mentor who quickly acclimates you to your tasks and projects. All the people are really nice, friendly, and helpful. They love seeing young, new people in the company and I've never felt scared when asking an employee a question.
It's really easy to poke around other departments and see what other scientists are doing. Most of the workers there are happy to let you shadow them and show you what they're doing.

Your workload and expectations depend on what mentor and department you get paired with. All the interns meet bi-weekly with the department head to report on what they've done and learned, which I thought was cool and intimidating at the same time. It forced you to make sure each two week block was productive and that your report brought something new to the table.

They usually get a ton of interns. When I worked there, there were 12 of us. We all got along. The intern camaraderie, coupled with the friendly company culture really made the company feel like home.

    Cons

The hierarchy is very rigid. I heard employees complaining that their career mobility was limited to their degree. I really didn't hear of the company offering any programs to pay for the employee's degrees.

Some departments and mentors may have unexciting or monotonous projects and it's hard to request a new mentor depending on what scientists need help. Some interns had a ton of free time and only had 1-2 hours of work per day. About 4 interns and I had a ton of work and often had to stay late to finish everything.

    Advice to Management

Provide more opportunities for employees to move up in the company.
