    Pros

I've worked at Sun Life for 8 years and enjoyed it for the most part. The people are the best part.

    Cons

Being a Canadian company, the focus is usually focused North of the border so it can be hard to get ahead.

I worked at Sun Life full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to mold individual career paths, internal posting is encouraged and can lead to success.

    Collaborative work environment

    Work/Life Balance.

Overall compensation is better than average

    Cons

    Lots of bureaucracy.

Weighing of cost versus benefit of doing work is sometimes out of balance. A lot of time is spent deriving answers to exactness, when time/energy would be better spent on bigger picture.

Little turnover, which sometimes leads to non-productive individuals or areas.

I worked at Sun Life full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits at this company were excellent, from vacation time to health care. Employees are great people who work hard and try to better the company.

    Cons

Management at multiple positions do not have experience in the Employee Benefits Industry. The Internal desk has 4 managers, none of which know the products or industry, as they all started in 2013. They do not know what is best for the company because they have not been in the industry long enough, makes for some frustrating decisions. Head of Internal "Sales" team is a lifelong underwriter with 0 sales experience.

    Advice to Management

Learn the product and industry trends instead of micro-managing dial numbers. Promote and hire people from within the industry who know the trends and approach to selling.

I have been working at Sun Life full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Generally friendly culture with good benefits and positive work/life balance. Respectful and professional work environment. Overall training for new hires is good.

    Cons

Financial services companies have struggled since the recession, and Sun Life is no different. Last few years have had reorganizations and expense cuts like other insurance companies.

I worked at Sun Life full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, competitive pay, is accessible via public transportation, and offered (the past tense being emphasized) opportunities to grow and build a career. The people with whom I worked were some of the most hardworking, friendly, and cooperative co-workers that I've ever met. Overall the environment used to be positive and geared toward productivity.

    Cons

Due to a constant shifting of upper level management over the past four years and those individuals' business decisions, the overall mood of the company changed from "we're a team" to "it's every man for himself." Another frustrating thing is that, for many positions, once you're employed there is a freeze in terms of moving to other jobs or department, sometimes lasting two years. The regulation is understandable, but stifling all the same.

    Advice to Management

Attempt to recruit some new blood in hopes of rebuilding some of the positivity from the past, because many of the employees are still jaded and unhappy.
