I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great company culture, collegial atmosphere, intelligent coworkers and smart, effective managers.

    Cons

In the final years, the top management lost their way and focused too hard on giving away the company crown jewels -- Solaris OS code -- for free.

    Advice to Management

Don't give away your patented technology for free!

    Pros

If you love technology, Sun was a great place to work. There was an engineering culture second to none, and you got the experience of working for a company that understood that when you make the market bigger, that benefits you. It's seen as a failure now, but really was just playing a longer game than the market had tolerance for.

    Cons

Politics. Insane politics. The California side of the company - particularly the non-technical management - was more like kindergarteners bashing each other in the head with rocks. Getting pulled into someone's office for them to try to enlist you in helping get their boss fired so they could take his job happened to me. Just awful.

    Advice to Management

Don't sell the company to Oracle. Oops, I guess it's too late for that. A lot of worthwhile technology went down the drain at that point.

    Pros

The people are amazing. I've never worked in a company before where your co-workers extend themselves so much to make a project successful and ensure those on the team are not only in sync but have the information and support they need to be successful

    Cons

The Leadership. This company has so much going for it yet there are those at the executive level who don't seem to understand the word focus.

    Advice to Management

Replace yourselves. Well not all management just few at the very top. It's great to have big dreams but you also need to know how to execute.

    Pros

Sun Microsystems was one of those companies that a person can look back upon and say, "those were the good ol' days." The culture was very good, the work was interesting and the pay was on par with the industry. No, it wasn't perfect. What company is? But Sun was novel in many areas such as company-wide work from home policies before it became trendy. It was a sad day when they were acquired. Many Sun-Alumni will agree that our network is still strong and supportive of one another. When you come across someone who used to work at Sun, even if you never worked with her before, a knowing smile will come across your face as you remember your time there.

    Cons

Leadership sometimes didn't listen to new or novel ways to grow the market.

Simply one of the best companies to work for simply one reason: They fostered a culture where everyone would help each other out.

    Cons

This company did not last longer.

    Advice to Management

Hat's off to you Scott and team - what an amazing ride.
