I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time

    Pros

Good benefit and vacation policy. Good management team, work from home policy also helps family work life balance

    Cons

Due to growth, many of the internal systems are antiquated and salary is not as competitive as it could be

    Advice to Management

Ensure that you are rewarding on performance only and stay current with competitive salaries to ensure employee retention.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great compensation and benefits. Positive atmosphere. Always a positive team feel. Didn't feel like anyone was more or less important than anyone else.

    Cons

Getting bought out by Oracle was a pretty huge con, as my group was cut due to being redundant.

    Advice to Management

Since they no longer exist as a company, I don't think any advice I give is warranted.

After bought by Oracle, I think the business is much better

    Pros

Great facilitates. ESPP. SunEd was nice for keeping up with certifications and new products lines. My direct manager was very good.

    Cons

Treated like an assembly line worker. Management obsessed with metrics. Too reliant on proprietary technology.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Sun Mic was the best company, I have worked at. Love the people and the culture. I really enjoyed my time there & learned tremendously from my managers, peers. It was a very enriching experience. I would say, it was the mothership for many Silicon Valley companies. And, way more valuable than a Havard MBA.

    Cons

Got acquired by the Reds. Need I say more. The culture shock was enormous and micro management by the new owner.

    Advice to Management

Great company. Empower employees to make great decisions for all stakeholders.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

    I was very well paid.

    Cons

This division of Oracle was originally a separate company, Hyperion Solutions. It was a terrible place to work. The unspoken motto was "Keep your head down and your nose to the grindstone." Micro-managing at every level. I was a manager and had to run every decision by my department head.

    Advice to Management

Send all levels of management to management training.
