I have been working at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Positive Working environment
    Emphasized employee retention
Resources allocated to training and advancement

    Cons

    company was continuously in flux
Had a required class called "managing Change"

    Advice to Management

Now that it has been absorbed into Oracle things should be fairly stable, but I hope it hasn't lost that cool vibe of caring for all the employees and valuing their contributions.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Sun Microsystems was a really great place to work from many perspectives: real offices, with doors and walls that went to the ceilings, great corporate culture, its embrace of telecommuting, the beautiful (Rivermark) campus, above-average compensation.

    Cons

I wish Sun's executives had been able to make the hard decisions (cutting people's pet but money-losing, non-strategic projects in favor of profitable or strategic projects) that were necessary to survive.

    Advice to Management

Sun Microsystems is gone, so offering advice to management is kind of pointless now, isn't it?

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people, excellent products and lots of passion to changing the world

    Cons

Some of the executives could not understand what the company was about
Tried to get into too many and different areas instead of focusing on core - i.e. StorageTek acquisition, buying middleware companies

    Advice to Management

Too late to tell them anything

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work from home flexibility, great work-life balance, no travel was required, the pay and benefits were excellent, team members were nice to work with, the Broomfield campus was very nice with a cafeteria providing a variety of menu/cuisine options.

    Cons

Distributed teams in varying time zones made it difficult to get everyone on the phone for a meeting at the same time.

    Advice to Management

Directors, VPs and other execs needed to co-mingle with the worker bees more than they did. Come down from their ivory tower every so often to see what was really going on in their organization.

    Pros

cowboy club, great opportunities, liberty, flexibility and room to get things done. Great for engineers but also for sales & marketing.

    Cons

more and more politics over the years. difficulties to get things done on a local level, more and more sign offs and signatures needed at Corp level for local stuff. Less room to get things done and make a difference.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what happens in the field and not only in the US, they’re the ones bringing in the money

I worked at Sun Microsystems as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The name of Sun Microsystem is recognizable by most tech savy people. I enjoy working in a fast paced work force that is creative and organized.

    Cons

It is harder for large corporations to create change that can be dynamic. Most corporations have a set path because it has been found to work for them.
