I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Sun was a enjoyable company to work for. Flexible and interested in your future. People were friendly and the product was dependable.

    Cons

Upper management became disinterested, was spending too much on selling their selves rather than promoting the company for the future.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the market shares that are changing. Research and Development can prove to be a advantageous tool.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you love technology, Sun was a great place to work. There was an engineering culture second to none, and you got the experience of working for a company that understood that when you make the market bigger, that benefits you. It's seen as a failure now, but really was just playing a longer game than the market had tolerance for.

    Cons

Politics. Insane politics. The California side of the company - particularly the non-technical management - was more like kindergarteners bashing each other in the head with rocks. Getting pulled into someone's office for them to try to enlist you in helping get their boss fired so they could take his job happened to me. Just awful.

    Advice to Management

Don't sell the company to Oracle. Oops, I guess it's too late for that. A lot of worthwhile technology went down the drain at that point.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The location of the building was nice.

    Cons

Managers consistently fell through on providing wisdom and knowledge about the products, as well as their own job descriptions. Employees are under-appreciated, unmotivated, and with their lack of support, unwelcome.
You will do much more work than what you are being paid to do. Any time a customer mistreats you, or is hostile, do not expect any type of intervention or retribution from your manager; they uphold the agreement that we promise our clients: "We will always take full responsibility for the client's issue, and be humble, even if the client is using foul language or is making death threats."

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, don't just hear them, but actually listen. You will lose them if you don't. Do not over work your level 2's, you need them the most. Learn how to do your job, so that you can help your employees do theirs.

Some slackers and incompetent management team made Sun set.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time

    Pros

As a Silicon Valley giant, Sun was a great place to learn and grow. Compensation was good, and benefits were excellent.

    Cons

After the ORCL acquisition, things changed dramatically and turnover was higher than expected. Sun was no longer Sun.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to find ways to listen better to employee feedback, In addition to annual reviews, informal reviews and chats should be done on a regular (monthly) basis.
