It's great if you want to hang out and cruise in your career. You can get really good at doing your job and be very comfortable and remain unchallenged.

For most it's a dead end. Little to no opportunities for promotion. Rumors of layoffs all the time.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Frexible work, capability of learning whatever you want, on your own time. Benefits are great.

    Cons

No career path, always downsizing: in this way there is no future... .
Management tells you that you can learn learn learn but never pay a training: you can learn on your own time and then you are required to use that knowledge for the company, without being recognized for the extra effort.

    Advice to Management

Make a plan to expand the business: we need to expand the operations and not cutting people.
Is that possible that there are no employee [other then directors] with 15 years of sevice in Sun ? after 10 years you get layoff for no reason

    Pros

Excellent benefits, much better than other industry peers. For the most part it's a laid-back work environment depending on what part of Sun you are working in. If you are a Slashdot-posting open-source lovin' geek, you'll love working for Sun. Company prizes innovation and engineering leadership.

    Cons

Within Sun Services, there is a blind adherence to metrics and processes. Management seems to manage by spreadsheet instead of common sense. Training and skills development consists of here's the manual, RTFM. Expectations by senior management are out of wack with the resources us grunts have on hand. More often you end up working overtime to compensate for the lack of staffing. High burn-out risk in Sun Services.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to see the forest from the trees. Put down that spreadsheet and start talking to the grunts doing the day-to-day stuff.

    Pros

no weekends or pager to carry

    Cons

Might be great to work in other areas of the company but I can't say that for the support organization.

    Advice to Management

    Take your support organization seriously.

You can set yourself up to be able to work from home.

    Cons

Very broad range of competency among peers.

    Advice to Management

More training and less bureaucracy please.

    Pros

The benefits and pay are the ONLY pros.

    Cons

There is quite the list: constant shift of managers, shift of tech applications (whether working or not). It is difficult to get technical help when it is needed.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course for a while - stop doing the constant lower level switch of management, give it a chance to work before changing up everything.

    Pros

    Training
    Comfortable work environment
    Opportunities for advancement

    Cons

    Too much micro-management
Too many technologies to support w/out proper training
Many of the outstanding people who grew the company have since left so the innovation and fresh approach on doing business has been replaced with bean counters

    Advice to Management

    Listen to the employees
Communicate which direction the company is going. Are we a software company? Hardware company? What are the key markets we should be targeting?

    Pros

good opportunities if you want to improve yourself in tech area. so its an ideal place for young people to develop themselves.

    Cons

continuous layoffs & no future visibility. no career path & future in some departments i.e support services. the company tries to be everything and lost vision i think. product range increasing but number of workers decreasing year by year. you need approvals from managers for almost everything which results in destroying self confidence.

    Advice to Management

    - eliminate the products that does not generate revenue
    - don't try to be everything, decrease the product numbers and concentrate on core products having future
    - be more customer oriented
