I worked at SunCoke Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary is pretty good for the area. Conditions are not as bad as what people would think at a coke plant.

    Cons

Long hours. Can occasionally work 14 days plus without a day off. Started with time and a half overtime even for salary. Now no OT pay at all. Keep raising employee pay amounts for insurance. Most of coworkers are pretty good but like most places some have agendas

    Advice to Management

Give employees a pat on the back sometimes and don't play favorites. Remember that people work to live and not live to work

I worked at SunCoke Energy (Less than a year)

    Pros

They hired many of the best people available within the Cincy-Dayton area to staff this plant when it started up and spent months training them before going into production.

    Cons

Mgmt was very suspicious of test results that did not indicate their product had the desired quality and typically suspected bad testing before questioning their own process integrity. Also, quality was - at least initially - a 1 person effort that required at least some work every day for 5 straight months.

I worked at SunCoke Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great 401k package, good compensation, supported employee development and conferences, was able to manage my work and do what needed to be done without a lot of oversight.

    Cons

Layoffs at corporate, steel and coal industry instability, new executive management set completely new direction for department, almost the entire department left the company in 7 months.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your people, keep the talented staff, communicate through out the company better. Work on employee retention.

    Pros

A very dynamic and challenging place to apply any skillset. There are a lot of problems to be solved and a good sum of money allocated to solving problems so it is a real playground for problem solvers. The team is mostly nice and open minded with most managers accessible and welcoming of your ideas.

    Cons

A lot of the problems are created by missing processes or insufficient management attention toward closing the loop on initiatives. Many things are started but never finished, promised and never delivered. The management is very ambitious but does not know how to efficiently work the team to attain the ambitious goals. This leaves the team working hard and still feeling like they didn't meet the mark. There is not much room for growth. A very flat organization means few opportunities to get promoted. Usually you have to move to get promoted. The middle line managers are always the reason for all the problems. This creates a very high turnover and a constant influx of new people that just don't know enough to progress the company forward.

    Advice to Management

Prioritize the initiatives and insure the work is completed. Take time to understand the process in place before blaming the managers and adding to the extremely high turnover. Create opportunities for career growth within company structure that does not rely on promotion alone. Focus on technical leaders rather than just "leaders".

I have been working at SunCoke Energy full-time

    Pros

Management is fair and treats employees well. Gain alot of technical experience in a short amount of time. Room to move up in company.

    Cons

Easy to get lost in the company and get focused in on one job.

    Pros

    Great People Doing their Best

    Cons

Top Heavy - flat / lean organization with very little or no room for career advancement. Project driven company always looking to hire consultants; rather than hiring in more talent (Hire in Chiefs but no Indians).
