I worked at SunGard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Management trusts you to get the job done; you're not micromanaged. They will invest in you to ensure you have the skills you need to be successful. A lot of employees can work from home. Opportunities to move within the organization and a wide range of products & geographies to work with.

    Cons

Very sales-focused; you will need to spend time in sales if you want to make it to the top. Not great at orientation: you're sort of thrown in at the deep end. Private equity owners have held the company long enough and will not suffer any tax penalty to sell it...which they're focused on doing. A lot of cost-cutting and nickel & dime'ing going on.

    Advice to Management

An employee is both an expense line item that could be cut and a valuable asset in which the company has invested years of effort and money. Understanding which is more important to the future growth of the company can be a difficult but critical skill.

I worked at SunGard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice perks: Can work from home from time to time, great gifts on your 5-10-15 years at work.

    Smart developers

Constantly improving the release cycle and following the best practices.

    Cons

Re-organization can happen frequently so this can be stressful.

Depending on the above, you can have a manager that doesn't share the same vision or ideas at all with the previous one so you will need to adapt.

    Pros

They offered more than I expected. Office culture seems to be very laid back.

    Cons

I haven't started working yet so I have none to speak of so far

I worked at SunGard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There was a lot of opportunity to learn and increase my skill. Got 4 certifications while working there and was only there for 2 years. Also, management implemented some of my ideas.

    Cons

I am committed to knowledge management and knowledge sharing. This company is not.

    Advice to Management

Giving lip service to knowledge management and knowledge sharing is not a recipe for success, nor is investing in cool tools and technology. No amount of technology amount of technology can make up for a corporation whose mission, leadership, and culture do not recognize and support knowledge sharing practices and investments in intellectual capital and innovation practices.

I worked at SunGard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

SunGard offers good benefits, and has some great people working there, many who are devoted to their customers.

    Cons

Since the LBO, the organizational structure has been transitioning from a business unit centered structure (or silos) to a far more inefficient functional organizational structure. This causes senior management to have to know and understand the operations of many business units, their needs, and their customer base. This is a failing proposition. The organization is also embracing off-shoring, an exercise that is doomed to fail in the long term, and which can only hurt the company as foreign employees leave SunGard to pursue better paying jobs, taking with them the expertise necessary to maintain operations.

    Advice to Management

Put control of your business units back with the folks that know and understand the products. Senior management cannot know, nor understand, the breadth of business that they are being asked to, and as such, the business units suffer.

I worked at SunGard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place for self-starters to work. Many challenging projects & clients to work on, teams were spread out with many interesting personalities. Compensation was commensurate with ability. Management was engaged with all project work at detail level. Quarterly Town Meetings to keep the staff informed of company progress.

    Cons

Some projects required short deadlines for delivery causing teams to work long hours in short time spans to deliver projects on time. Demanding customers.

I worked at SunGard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good work/life balance. Opportunity for promotion/recognition if you put in the work. Vacation days above average for the US. Could get more sick days.

    Cons

However, in terms of actual positions to go up the chain, it is limited unless you count on employee turnover. It is more and more acting like a "big company". Bureaucracy is growing.

    Advice to Management

Go back to basics. Streamline the bureaucracy.
