I worked at SunPower full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Manufactures highest efficiency solar panels on the market
Critical technology for the future of the planet.

    Cons

Management consistently establishes unrealistic goals and timelines, then cancels entire programs when not met.
"Preferred" vendors allowed inappropriate/self-serving input on technical directions.

    Advice to Management

Solicit and incorporate input from technology team to define viable goals and commit requested resources.

I have been working at SunPower full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most people who work at SunPower are smart, genuine, and have their hearts in the right place. There's a sense of pride among those working here. The Richmond office is beautiful and has a relaxed, friendly vibe. The company has a great product and has contributed significantly to the solar field in general.

    Cons

Leadership seems completely disengaged from employee perspectives and satisfaction. Morale has plummeted since the lay-offs and hardly anything is being done to ensure remaining employees are satisfied and will stay. Upper management (and mid-level management) are good ol' boys clubs. Extremely low female:male ratio in sales, products, and EPC. There's not much positive feedback or recognition of hard work - instead, there's a lot of gossip and negative talk about people behind their backs.

    Advice to Management

    1. Most people are not happy at SunPower right now. It doesn't need to cost much to check in with employees and bring some celebration and enjoyment back into the office. It used to be a joy to work for this company, and I think it can be again with the right attention and leadership.
    2. Make more of an effort to find and hire talented women. The old school sexism and boys club mentalities at SunPower are not going to change until there's a critical mass of competent women across departments (especially EPC).
    3. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. There are a lot of meetings and processes, intended to promote efficiency and save money, which instead burden staff and managers and make it hard to do one's job (and to be creative/flexible).

I worked at SunPower full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great at giving back to the community. Offer 3 days a year for volunteering in the community. Nice people. Good benefits.

    Cons

They have been in business a long time but really no clue how to run it. Very disconnected across the board. No loyalty to their hardworking employees. Seem to like keeping employees that don't get along with others, bad peer reviews, or could care less if they are there.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the unknowledgeable overpaid VP's and employees that could care less, start appreciating and following through to keep the employees that make the company money.

I worked at SunPower full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The mission resonates with everyone and the company produces a superior product in a generally commoditized industry. Employees are extremely productive.

    Cons

Management has little visibility into the day to day activities of the front-liners and does not seem to grasp the effort it takes to get things done. Tight margins and high capital expenditures leave limited resources for automation and process improvement leveraging technology.

    Advice to Management

Keep the lights on through the difficult times ahead.

    Pros

    Great Technology, Great Mission.
    Talented and Passionate people.
Exec Management tries to connect with employees by having regular all hands.
    Benefits & Pay are competitive.

    Cons

Solar Industry is going through another round of shake out. Sunpower is losing the cost war with the Chinese cheaper product that are flooding the market. So it's a risky place to be now.
Lots of inefficiencies in the processes and nobody has time to go to the root of it.

    Advice to Management

Do not spend on additional Capex before you figure out your focus. Innovation is important so as sustaining a revenue generating business model. Take care of your employees. It's a mission driven company, so keep that motivation alive. Be transparent & take responsibility for your judgments & decisions when that affects thousands of peoples livelihood.
