I have been working at SunPower full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fantastic market position and an amazing staff

    Cons

Executive team is completely ensconced in their own world. They show up for all hands meetings to regurgitate all of the old platitudes. Women and minorities tend not to get promoted or trusted with key assignments. There is a lot of talk about improving diversity but, and there's a theme here, senior management doesn't take any effective action.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the E-suite and come see what is actually happening. If we had decent support, we could dominate the industry.

    I worked at SunPower full-time

    Pros

Great mission and a great company. Lots of smart people. Real differentiation in a market dominated by commodities.

    Cons

Moves slowly, and sometimes can't get out of its own way. In general, the solar industry is very challenging in terms of profitability.

    Advice to Management

Streamline internal processes and focus the company on a few things than will win.

  6. "Great people, dynamic business"

    Pros

As a member of a large R&D organization, working at SunPower felt very much like being at a traditional research company, similar to the reputation held by Bell Labs in the distant past. People come to work for SunPower from all around the country because they want to make a difference in our energy supply by supplementing or replacing fossil fuels with photovoltaic solar power. This is a unifying, clarifying, and fun mission to participate in.

    Cons

It is hard to think of a con for SunPower. I left in order to obtain a pay increase at a job with higher responsibility.

    Advice to Management

Keep doin' what you're doin'... and diversify the employee stock grants so they can choose, say, ETFs instead of SPWR if that's best for their financial goals.

    Pros

Very few places can you not only enjoy your work, but also feel good about what you're doing. SunPower is one of those places. I've been here over 2 years and while there have been a few issues over that time, it's apparent management is always working to help alleviate any problems employees may be having.

Good culture, very smart people. Willingness to invest in employees to keep learning. Big emphasis on the mission always trickles down throughout the org.

    Cons

Sales seems to do a good job of promoting from within but I'm not sure I see that permeating throughout the organization. Maybe just a lack of transparency into all areas but some people seem to be bogged down in the same role for 5+ years and end up having to leverage another offer to be considered for a promotion. This may be prevalent at large corporations but I can't speak to that.

Austin office is lacking compared to Richmond/San Jose, CA.

    Advice to Management

The E-staff seems to really care about employee feedback, whether good or bad, which makes everyone at the company feel like they have a voice. I've seen a lot of positive change in my 2+ years and things are getting better (it seems). Nice job.
