I worked at SunPower full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great at giving back to the community. Offer 3 days a year for volunteering in the community. Nice people. Good benefits.

    Cons

They have been in business a long time but really no clue how to run it. Very disconnected across the board. No loyalty to their hardworking employees. Seem to like keeping employees that don't get along with others, bad peer reviews, or could care less if they are there.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the unknowledgeable overpaid VP's and employees that could care less, start appreciating and following through to keep the employees that make the company money.

I worked at SunPower full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The mission resonates with everyone and the company produces a superior product in a generally commoditized industry. Employees are extremely productive.

    Cons

Management has little visibility into the day to day activities of the front-liners and does not seem to grasp the effort it takes to get things done. Tight margins and high capital expenditures leave limited resources for automation and process improvement leveraging technology.

    Advice to Management

Keep the lights on through the difficult times ahead.

    Pros

Excellent leadership! The two managers over the Project Coordinators truly advocate for their teams. Great group of people to work with.

    Cons

Solar industry is on the decline right now.

    Advice to Management

Communicate changes before they happen (not as they are happening).

    Pros

Great benefit package, friendly people and high quality product

    Cons

Management doesn't know or doesn't care about following factors, which is killing their business:

    1. Electricity is a commodity: If your panels are more expensive, in order to call yourself "premium" you should offer a "premium" service.
    2. Meritocracy is crucial for success, especially in tech. You should stop taking care of your "bros", and focus on individual performance.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, not because a consultant told you do so.

    Pros

Good working environment, smart people, flex time, lots of perks, pays well. My managers cared about professional growth and helped share my career. Offers a great product across various markets.

    Cons

Management can be all over the place causing constant change in company direction. Too many layers of management. Because of its propriety product it cannot compete with some markets.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the layers and hire more individual contributors.

I have been working at SunPower full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some people are very nice and smart.

    Cons

The people who did a great job is usually not rewarded, and your performance or promotion is closely related to who you know. There are too many managers, who like giving orders but know little about what is being done. They care about your results only because they can have something to say at the meeting to get the credit, but they actually don't understand. When other people ask questions, they kick the ball to others. Nobody wants to take responsibilities and everyone is afraid of failure.

    Pros

Great mission and a great company. Lots of smart people. Real differentiation in a market dominated by commodities.

    Cons

Moves slowly, and sometimes can't get out of its own way. In general, the solar industry is very challenging in terms of profitability.

    Advice to Management

Streamline internal processes and focus the company on a few things than will win.

    Pros

As a member of a large R&D organization, working at SunPower felt very much like being at a traditional research company, similar to the reputation held by Bell Labs in the distant past. People come to work for SunPower from all around the country because they want to make a difference in our energy supply by supplementing or replacing fossil fuels with photovoltaic solar power. This is a unifying, clarifying, and fun mission to participate in.

    Cons

It is hard to think of a con for SunPower. I left in order to obtain a pay increase at a job with higher responsibility.

    Advice to Management

Keep doin' what you're doin'... and diversify the employee stock grants so they can choose, say, ETFs instead of SPWR if that's best for their financial goals.
