    Leadership turnover and inconsistent accountability

Jan 22, 2019 - Maintenance in Commerce City, CO

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Overall work life balance is good. Pay/benefits are good for employees but contractors are overpaid

    Cons

Constant leadership changes from Canada. Low ceiling for advancement unless you are Canadian or one of the chosen. High performers are over promoted. Unqualified internal candidates are put in leadership roles over much higher qualified external ones. Leads to lack of leadership knowledge and bench strength

If you live to work, this place is for you.

May 18, 2014 - Engineer in Commerce City, CO

    Pros

If you make the cut, and pay your dues for a few years, you can make a lifelong career at their refinery. Play the politics, make the right "friends," follow the company line, and have the intelligence, perseverance and stamina necessary.... you should be able to stay employed for life. It's an exciting place to work; you won't get bored.

    Cons

Bait and switch on the amount of work necessary for engineers. A 60 hour work week would not be unusual for projects once funding comes through. A project engineer in the Commerce City Refinery is expected to handle 6-10 projects for turnaround periods, ranging from $500K to $4M, each. The work filters down to the discipline engineers. Turnaround, of course, requires extreme overtime. Safety is given lip service. If it costs too much to bring up to code, the cost is spread out over too many years. The question isn't "if" it will happen at this facility; it is "when".

Changes are needed with Turnaround Group and Maintenance Department

Aug 22, 2014 - Maintenance Technician in Commerce City, CO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

"Safety first" is stressed at all levels. Good pay and benefits. If you are in the right department with good leadership, you can expand your knowledge and experience tremendously.

    Cons

Too many managers at US refinery(mainly Canadian), still voice the safety first motto, but push production before all else. Little concern over working people long hours or under adverse conditions. Safety incidents are not reported or falsified to ensure manager bonuses. Starting to fade from the work/life balance, and expectiing folks to work longer hours. Promotion and hiring of unqualified or incompotent leaders, becuase they don't question authority and have low moral value.
