I worked at Suncor full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Great people, great benefits...

    Cons

There is a 'if you don't like it, there's the door' mentality and environment. There is a lot of 'corporate' sabotage among the managers and supervisors due to this environment. Everyone is out for themselves which thrives in this environment.

    Advice to Management

Look deep into your upper management and see who has a history of this.. just ask the workers.. they will tell you..

I worked at Suncor full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Unlimited potential for hard work.

    Cons

Due to the unlimited potential, if you climb too high, the ax is sure to find you... It's a marathon, not a 100m dash. Set a pace you can sustain and stick to it.

    Advice to Management

Read the cons. Also, there's a few too many out of province "buddies" clogging middle management. These cliques need to be disbanded. They're not bad at attempting to break them up, but they need to dig a little deeper. If you're not from McMurray, don't automatically assume that you know better because you're from . Now that I've been nearly everywhere else, McMurray-ites seem world class. If you are from McMurray, keep...

I worked at Suncor full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I would say hardly 15% or less people would be getting total emoluments less than $100k per year. Mostly transparent atmosphere; Good resources within the corporate teams. Benefits, amenities and support services are excellent.

    Cons

Due to few disgruntled senior employees, real contributing employees are overlooked- quite common in large org. Org structure is still heavy on top (VP + Directors) even after restructuring. there are instances where single digit # of employees are reporting to such individuals. There is potential to reduce the cost/ waste in materials, contracts (particularly projects), employee benefits (like cell phones, benefits)...

    Advice to Management

There are still opportunities to optimize the organization structure by reducing the senior staff- Directors and above. I would support decentralizing the service teams further. There's room for improvement (simplifying) performance review process.

    Pros

Professional environment, well paced, good people, good systems and processes, excellent emphasis on safety.

    Cons

Some Incompetent spineless leaders only focused on blaming others for covering their lack of basic knowledge. Its astonishing how some continue to get away with it again and again. Its sad to see such an organisation go down this path...

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Suncor full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good money and bonuses, but that's it.

    Cons

Toxic culture, Sr leadership is disrespectful and only care about moving up the ladder, which creates a back stabbing culture. If your smart, make sure no one knows or you become a target.

    Advice to Management

Walk the talk, and practice what you preach

I have been working at Suncor full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - great people to work with - great peer-to-peer support - great salary - great leaders at VP level and above

    Cons

    - mid-level leaders are not held accountable (managers and directors) - HR excuses are made to not pay women equal salaries (process, timing) - innovative ideas are not welcomed in regular operations - work is done in silo's with little to no collaboration

    Advice to Management

Start holding your managers and directors accountable. Ensure there is a constructive way for teams to provide feedback on leaders. Make some tough decisions to remove bad leaders.

I worked at Suncor for more than 10 years

    Pros

Comp and benefits plans are top notch.

    Cons

Very poor leadership in the controllers group. Most senior finacmce leaders have little to no operational experience. Those that do below them that do have that experience appear to be seen as threats. Strategic focus is lacking. Once again senier finance leadership doesn't seem to know what direction they want to go...however this lack of focus somehow translates into lower level mgrs and staff not knowing what...

    Advice to Management

Start moving out poor performing finance Directors and GMs. These individuals are causing people to leave and dragging down the organization.
