I worked at Suncor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay and Benefits are the only Pro's at Suncor.

    Cons

I was managing a group of 10 people and was asked to go on project to be a project manager. After 36 months of doing absolutely nothing in my project management role and given a demotion (because there was no projects to manage) I was given a severance package. 18 of the 36 months I didn't even go into an office. I literally set at my house, watched TV and played on social media. I worked for Suncor for 28 years and this is how they treat people. I would have never agreed to go on project if I had known that there was no project to manage. Basically Suncor's management wanted to find a job for another manager so they lied to me, back filled my position and then gave me nothing to do for 36 months before they laid me off. Can you say Constructive Dismissal (it's a legal term)!

    Advice to Management

Fire all of the Director's and above in Finance and start over.

I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay scale is competitive, benefits package is excellent (healh/dental/vision, FSA/DCFSA), flex day program for FTEs, strong end-of-year compensation, 401k and pension

    Cons

Cronyism is rampant - if you have a good relationship with someone higher up, then you are set even if you don't necessarily have the skill set or interest for a job at the next level. It really is about who you know. Also, be prepared to toe the party line - if you want to think outside the box or promote some strategies that management didn't think of first, Suncor may not be the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Work on developing employees with the strengths they have. Fitting square pegs into round holes has never worked for anyone. Suncor has some great people with real potential to grow if leaders could just look past their leadership for a minute.

    Pros

the checks cleared every two weeks, there was no harassment, I never got beat up going into the office. To re-iterate I was never assaulted at work.

    Cons

not to shabby, had better, had worse. I wouldn't go back to working there if I had a better option. not to shabby, had better, had worse.

I have been working at Suncor full-time

    Pros

Good company. Good benefits including 401K match and pension. People are generally nice and its a fun place to work. The recent change in upper management as improved employee morale and made the workplace better.

    Cons

Pay is low compared to other companies, but bonuses make up for the lower pay. There are not many opportunities in the US. Have to move to Canada to move up in the company.

    Advice to Management

The review process is could use more transparency. If you work in a group with lots of high performers, you are at a disadvantage when it comes to bonus and stock options. Some of the worst people in our group is 10 times better than the best performers in other groups. However, you are really only compared with the people within your group when it comes to ratings and reviews.
