I have been working at Suncor

    Pros

    1. Safety focus-- job # 1 a key value 2. Great people with collegial work environment and largely honest, open culture 3. Great work opportunities--solving problems and making an impact 4. Exposure to Senior management ( GMs, Directors, Vice President all the way to SVP, EVP) 5. Company adopts suggestions and ideas and actually recognises the person who made them 6. Rapid growth leads to promotion and... lots of career flexibility 7. Good benefits--17 PTOs, Health insurance and benefit plans even if Cash compensation is slightly below oil sands average 8 Flexibility and training generosity--company will pay for professional designations and management courses with few questions asked as long as your supervisor/manager is along

    Cons

    1. Very long hours-due to rapid growth and staffing shortage 2. screwed up SAP implementation leading to lots of problems, over work in figuring out financial information, EHS and other stats 3. Fort McMurray sucks as a place to live---sky high housing costs, lousy place to date if you are a single guy, transient population 4. Employees being poached by competitors and contractors--high employee turnover due to... Oil sands boom. I have had to train so many green people from the Martimes and Immigrants only to lose them to turnover or other departments 5. Weak HR department a major impediment to Suncor's growth plans

    Advice to Management

    1. Get a good retention package out fast or a lot of our good people may be lost to competitors 2. Work on fly in and fly out--- we can never keep up with housing issues in Fort Mac 3. Invest more in training and get the bloody SAP system worked out with urgency before starting another initiative
