A big company with a lot of opportunity

Jan 9, 2015 - Human Resources Advisor in Calgary, AB

    Pros

Suncor's the largest company in Canada, very stable and compensation is great. There is interesting work if you're willing to get your hands dirty and try something new. Suncor has great work/life balance and there is opportunity to grow but you have to find it for yourself.

    Cons

The company is still going through a lot of growing pains... - processes are difficult, unestablished and hard to follow - the company is on a journey to "operational excellence" but it's not well understood by the employees and management isn't walking the walk - there's a lot of grey area when it comes to accountability and performance management - there's a lot of duplicate work and working in siloes

    Leadership turnover and inconsistent accountability

Jan 22, 2019 - Maintenance in Commerce City, CO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Overall work life balance is good. Pay/benefits are good for employees but contractors are overpaid

    Cons

Constant leadership changes from Canada. Low ceiling for advancement unless you are Canadian or one of the chosen. High performers are over promoted. Unqualified internal candidates are put in leadership roles over much higher qualified external ones. Leads to lack of leadership knowledge and bench strength

    No work/life balance

    Dec 16, 2010 -

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Salary was average. PTO/vacations looked great - but the reality turned out to be that employees are discouraged from taking days off, or are expected to work remotely on their days off.

    Cons

Very political environment. Universal micro-management. Extensive change fatigue in all employees. Brutal work pace. There is no recognition of work/life balance and family commitments are unacceptable - many work groups do not have any parents in the workforce (especially in female-dominated areas) - parents have been driven away from working at Suncor because of the excessive demands.

Good people but a little old fashion.

    Pros

Job security, if your looking for a job with tons of security due to the union and the strong postion of the company than this is your place.

    Cons

Being a union structure it slow to progress as every promotion is seniority based. If you want to climb the ranks fast this is not your place. Also had forced Overtime that was mandatory to work which made the work/life balance score poor.
