I worked at Sunflower State Health Plan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great pay, benefits and hours

    Cons

Management is terrible. It's like a high school atmosphere. Too many cliques. If youre in good with the manager you pretty much get your way; but of you're a loyal committed employee they give you a hard time. Managers are unprofessional. They tell confidential information about employees and gossip about it.

I have been working at Sunflower State Health Plan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Benefits
    Paid Holidays off
Hours are 8-5 except when forced to work overtime.
Nice building, and parking area, with plenty of windows.
Good location for shopping, places to eat. Easy access off of I 35, but traffic is heavy.

    Cons

    1. Poor Upper Management, constant changes, micro management.
    2. Employees are graded on productivity and quality of work. Management has a tendency to look for all the weaknesses and write employees up using a verbal discussion, verbal warning, written warning and file warning on a PIP. Lack of praises from supervisors and managers to employees.
    3. Lenexa, Kansas office has a buddy system. They like to hire their own, meaning one supervisor, one project manager, and two upper management are all best friends.
    4. Employees feel like they work on a production line, answering phones, typing information, and graded on how many tasks are completed on a daily basis.
    5. Large turnover, of Referral Specialists, Nurses, Case Managers and other essential personnel.
    6. Human Resources lacks the authority to address problem upper management issues due to the buddy system.
    7. Managements favorite subject is employee attendance. Every time an employee is late, or leaves early 0.5 point. Calls in, another point. If an employee has more than 4 points in a 4 month time-frame then management will write the employee up. No sympathy for sick kids, car problems, or parents having surgery . They can fire you based on attendance if too many days are missed.
    8. Low Morale
    9. Largest complaint among employees is the internal customer service dissatisfaction with the work environment.
    10. Upper Management has a tendency to "dislike" someone and will make their life miserable until they quit.

    Advice to Management

Centene Corporate needs to clean house and get rid of the four buddies at the Lenexa office. There will continue to be problems until this is addressed. In the same department, four besties should not be allowed to work together.

I have been working at Sunflower State Health Plan full-time

    Pros

Being part of a new managed care system. Management listens and works with your concerns or suggestions. They give you all materials you need in order to do your job. It's like working for part of your family, they do truly care even though it is a huge corporation. Competitive Wages and benefits.

    Cons

I work remotely so doing a lot of the training via teleconference can be really difficult at times.

    Advice to Management

Try to always let staff know when their are upper management positions available. You should always try to promote from within. It can make staff feel that there is no room to grow or undervalued.

I have been working at Sunflower State Health Plan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, easy to use PTO. Friendly co-workers, willing to help when needed.

    Cons

Management does not always listen to staff, the ones that are doing the work. Therefore, things that need to be fixed and could be fixed easily continue to be more difficult than necessary.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the suggestions of the staff actually doing the work. They are an intelligent group with some great ideas on how to make things work smoother.

    Pros

One of the best Customer Service departments I have worked with. Management is very supportive and collaborative. We have the opportunity to help the Medicaid population in Kansas. Every call is different, and most members and providers are appreciative of our help

    Cons

Keep improving the systems we work with

    Advice to Management

Keep up the conversations between management and staff.

    Pros

Great salary and benefits. The health plan is young, so there are ample opportunities for advancement/career development. It's a sink or swim atmosphere, if you're motivated you'll do succeed.

    Cons

Long hours depending on the week. Slightly less than average family/work life balance.

    Advice to Management

    Encourage your teams!

    Pros

Good benefits if you are able to use them for time off. Nice people to work with for the most part.

    Cons

Horrible, toxic work environment, favoritism. People in positions they are not qualified for or experienced. Punitive, very poor upper management at SHP. Big turnover, workers not happy here. Let good people go and keep poor employees- makes no sense. Not focused on what they are supposed to be doing-taking care of medicaid members. Atmosphere not good for work environment, most staff looking for other employment. No work life balance at all.

    Advice to Management

Start over with management, starting at the top. Hire from within, not your friends but qualified people.
