    Pros

Great team environment and place to get lots of experience. Lots of talented people with lots of experience to learn from. Good work life balance as long as you can prioritize your time and deliver results.

    Cons

Senior Management lacks good leadership and fundamental support to do your best. Compensation doesn't reward and recognize all of the work and activities you are expected to do.

    Advice to Management

better communication from all levels of management and invest more in developing people and processes. Compensation comes from the company, appreciation comes from your manager.

I have been working at Sungard Availability Services full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great technology, SGAS is a market leader in DR. They are a little late to the cloud game, but because of their long history in the Data Center business they are easily putting out better offerings than market leaders.
My boss is amazing, seriously one of the best supervisors I've ever had.
Work/Life balance is good. It comes and goes with how busy you are. When it's busy you can work 80 hours, but when it's slow you can log a meaningful 40.

The company as a whole gets it.

    Cons

The products carry a premium price tag, this can make the sale a bit more difficult.
Most people are either tenured at SGAS for 15-20+ years, or are less than 1 year in. This can make knowing who to go to difficult.
Product information on the community site isn't updated, and has conflicting information.

I do worry about the potential for the company to be sold. It's private and venture backed, and a ROI will be sought on that investment. It's less a question of when they will be bought but more a question of who will buy SGAS.

Overall the majority of the culture is older, and tend to be more conservative. I think this makes SGAS come off as stuffy in meetings with clients that are increasingly more liberal, and more open to out of the box ideas. I'd like to see SGAS be more agile and speed up a bit.

    Advice to Management

I would focus on bringing products to market that are more meaningful, I think there is a large focus on SAP/Oracle, and I think those are solid, but niche plays. Given the mantra of 'every dollar counts' I'd like to see SGAS really come in with a broader blanket offering (Like R2C-SRM - this should be updated to be less focused on the storage replication (ie, ESR-EMC etc) and move to the vSphere level. This way storage vendor is less of a barrier to entry.

Overall - I'm quite happy with SGAS. Andy Stern seems to get it, and the SVP level down all seem focused on success. Like any company there are politics, but I try to focus on doing my job and staying out of that.

Keep the mindset of 'Do what's right for the customer' - it's working!

I worked at Sungard Availability Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay was good, and I liked the hours (12 hours days, 3-4 days a week), which gave me weekdays off to do other stuff.

    Cons

I've already mentioned training was haphazard, and that may be a contributing factor the mistake which got me fired. A bigger con is Sungard's propensity for offshoring US day jobs. The division which I was a part of just announced that ALL US jobs in that division will be sent to Puerto Rico in October, which makes it so amusing that they're still advertising my position on Glassdoor (Systems Engineer II, Thornton, CO)

    Advice to Management

Look up the history of Circuit City. Firing the more expensive, more experienced employees did NOT save it.

I have been working at Sungard Availability Services full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This is a good company to work for. The benefits and support are great.

    Cons

The company feels to be in a constant state of flux. Worries of job relocation seem to be imminent as the company decides budget and direction.

    Advice to Management

Decide and commit to a growth path of a US company. Outsourcing may cut costs but low intercompany morale hurts production and talent retention.
