    Pros

Overall, my Store Manager was the most professional, warm and dedicated person I have ever worked for. She had immense product knowledge, sense of humor and strict workmanship. We always wanted to excel for her due to her encouragement. Accolades (sp?) for our sales were constant. We were treated as though the store's business was our own business. We all stood for the Sur la Table value and brand because of the positive environment.

    Cons

The ability to get a nominal pay increase was not available at the time. Must be a real hustler to work there - it is constantly busy and you are always on the move. Not really a con for many - but don't apply if you can't take constant business flow.

    Advice to Management

Offer just a tad more upper management incentive flow to the sales floor. Kudos were sent frequently, but maybe they should be addressed to the individual employee rather than to the store in general.

    Pros

Great Brand and the management is passionate. Company was mom and pop - is now focused on growth... some old timers are bitter - but now the company is profitable and secure.

    Cons

These people work hard and expect the same from everyone! VPs are the first to come in and the last to leave - a big work ethic is expected.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more! There are lots of good things going on- lots of promotion from with in - but it is not always celebrated.

    Pros

I love working at Sur La Table because it's one of the few places where you can still get recognition for working hard and thinking on your feet. The company is small, and still feels very entrepreneurial.
The product is very fun if you have an interest in cooking too.

    Cons

The product can be overwhelming...there's a lot of it!
Never seems like there is ever enough time to gt everything done.
Not a lot of operational procedures.

    Advice to Management

It would be great to see more culinary programs in new stores.
In-stire cooking classes really make selling a whole lot easier!

    Bomun program pays out!
Al ot of room to think on the job.

    Cons

    Hard work.
    A lot of ambiguity
    lots of change

    Advice to Management

Slow down the floor moves as well as the price changes - we do a lot of $.04 mark ups that feel like a waste of time!

    Pros

Good benefits for full time employees, nice bonus plan, paid vacation time, sick and personal days, flexible schedules, good tools to get the job done, great discounts

    Cons

The plan isn't always shared till it's in action so then you have to recover and adapt to the new plan, but it's like that in most companies

    Advice to Management

make internal promotions easier, outside the company there are good people but the ones in the company are the ones who make you look great and deserve the chance to achieve a better position

I have been working at Sur La Table full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The opportunity to climb through the ranks is present, if you're willing to work hard and put yourself out there. A lot of people in the corporate office started as store employees, and through hard work and dedication, made it to corporate positions. The corporate environment is relaxed, execs and upper-level management are easy to talk to and always available, and there's always tons of perks, like food, samples, products, parties, etc.

    Cons

It's a lot of work, but that should be understood. It's a relatively fledgling company compared to others, so expect to take a lot on. At the store level, understand that yes, you will be rushed. Yes, there will be pushing and coaching to make sales. After all, it is a retail company.

    Advice to Management

Keep the lines of communication open and make sure that employees know they're appreciated, and that upward mobility is a possibility.
