I worked at Surrey County Council full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A large council with a correspondingly broad remit
    Good benefit scheme
Diverse work with autonomy but good support structures when needed
    Great for work/life balance

    Cons

    Regular reorganisation / structural changes
There is a lack of clarity from senior management in some areas about strategic direction which makes it difficult work together

    Advice to Management

Make strategic decisions and communicate them to staff so that everyone understands what that's aiming for.

    Pros

A fantastic ongoing training package and support from my team members and managers. Support from OH should you experience a crisis in your personal life, which I have. Full support and empathy to get you back to work only when you are well enough. My benefits package is really useful as I am a singe parent. staff to follow the SCC policies & procedures so all employee's work within these guidelines, so no confusion as to what is good practice. Good support from my manager regarding a whistle blowing incident, which was dealt with in a very professional manner, so I felt heard and supported throughout the reporting procedure. Flexible and supportive attitude from my managers at times needed to deal with personal issues.

    Cons

I have not experienced any cons at my work placement or in my role.

    Advice to Management

my advice to my management is to continue supporting and listening to your team as you do, which makes working for SCC a fantastic experience.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Surrey County Council full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You tend to be able to take time off when you want and flexible working is quite well supported. LG pension scheme

    Cons

Despite investing huge amounts of public money in combatting the bullying culture it is just as prevalent now as it was nearly a decade ago. All the more insidious because senior people now have convenient language to hide behind.
People are treated with disrespect and expected to cover for the inadequacies of senior leaders by taking decisions leaders should be taking, constantly fire-fighting to protect the organisation from the next crisis or press report.

    Advice to Management

Listen, respect, responsibility, trust - you are woefully far from all of these

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Surrey County Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Very Secure (Even with re-structure they promote internal transfer)
-9am-5pm is encouraged. In my team they didn't like you working over time
    -Good for Work/Life Balance
-VERY promotional of flexible working (e.g. working at home if needed)

    Cons

Progression opportunities are very difficult. For example, because of employment structure it is very difficult to advance. You can work hard and do the same job as those at a higher level but a promotional role can not be created until someone leaves

    Advice to Management

Reward isn't always down to pay but recognition. Sometimes a new job title could be enough to satisfy some

I have been working at Surrey County Council full-time

    Pros

    Nice and friendly colleagues generally
Not difficult work if you work in admin but sometimes stressful
No much overstaying or long hours

    Cons

    No helpful training
    Changes structure a lot

    Advice to Management

Don't expect unqualified people to do the same role you do because you are understaffed (social care)

I have been working at Surrey County Council full-time

    Pros

    - The pension
    - There are some nice people working there

    Cons

    - Incompetence in senior management
    - A real problem with bullying that is ignored by senior management and HR. It is not taken seriously and some senior management bully their own staff terribly.
    - The HR department is the worst I have ever experienced (in over 20 years). Constantly conflicting advice, contradict themselves and offering no support and bad advice.
    - No way of progressing through the organisation

    Advice to Management

Senior management need to lead by example. They need to encourage staff at all levels to grow and succeed, but they instead (some of them at least) act like dictators.

    Cons

Poor IT systems. Process led lots of hoops to jump through

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Surrey County Council (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Decent work-life balance
    - Some good, committed and diligent people across the organisation
    - Some good CPD been put in place
    - Some experience of good middle managers

    Cons

    - Standard of senior management in the organisation is very poor
    - Do not appreciate the value of their greatest asset - internal staff
    - Stuffy and complacent culture
    - Waste a lot of time on pet / vanity projects
    - Overemphasis on image / perception
    - Little opportunity to progress unless you have the right connections - many of the NGDPs and very bright graduates I knew when I joined had left to pursue careers elsewhere

    Advice to Management

    - A lot of you probably need to go (if you haven't already) - the difference between the leadership at my current employers and Surrey is staggering
    - You need to focus more on outputs and quality rather than people being 'on message' / being good political operators - this means better strategic and analytical skills
    - You need better talent management - this means considering ALL your staff, NOT only the ones who shout loudest

    Lack of induction
Lack of support by Senior Management
Poor working conditions (overcrowded, lack of technology)
    Poor car parking facilities
    Poor quality technology
    Poor quality technology help centre
    Lack of appraisal system

    Advice to Management

Reasonable standards of pay, working conditions, induction, and staff support by senior management should be offered
