Salaries aren't very good at the retail level, and annual raises are incremental (2-5%)

I worked at Susquehanna Bancshares full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A well run company in comparison to other big dogs. Not as aggressive as some larger competitors. Friendly back office and front office. Actually customer oriented. Benefits are excellent, coaching is in place and their training department (called Learning Central) has some of the most vibrant trainers I've met in my life. If only college had been like that.

    Cons

Depending on your area, you may find it hard to advance. Turnover is very low, which is fantastic if you're happy doing what you do, but ineffective for advancement. I chose to jump ship to further my career, and it was one of the worst decisions I've ever made.

    Advice to Management

More branches in the Baltimore metro area.

    Pros

Enjoyed working there. The people were the best part of the job, great sales and ops group. If you keep your head down and do the work, it's great. Good benefits.

    Cons

Management is a little out of touch with staff... new management began to feel much more corporate, which some might prefer. You need to ask for the salary you want, they will offer as low as they can possibly get from you.

    Advice to Management

Be direct and be fair. Make sure you recognize the people that work for you and a little friendliness goes a long way.

    Pros

Great people who care about one another and collaborate well. I worked on many cross-functional project teams, and all who participated cared about the success of the project and team. Sale to BB&T is a good opportunity for customers and employees.

    Cons

Frequent organizational/leadership changes led to frequent "new" initiatives and overall changes in direction, which made it difficult to gain momentum and reach high level of success as an organization.

    Advice to Management

Commit to the corporate direction, provide consistent message and support/tools, acknowledge incremental success, allow the great employees to shine.
