I have been working at Sutter Health part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Skilled caring staff, from doctors to all support staff. Focus on excellent patient care.

    Cons

Large corganization so likely varies a lot depending on area and position hired into. Management push is saving money, finding ways to do more with less. As everywhere, office politics happen.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff and implement their ideas when possible. Compensate and reward us with money as well as praise for a job well done.

I have been working at Sutter Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good teamwork amongst nurses. Ratios are strictly adhered to. Management is approachable and helpful. Set schedules, excellent pay, good benefits and I never have trouble getting time off. We have our own dedicated clinical educator in the ER and our own dedicated pharmacist. The ER providers value nursing staff and have a high level of respect for them.

    Cons

Being an inner-city hospital, we serve a very diverse population of patients. There is a lot of homelessness, mental health patients and substance abuse related problems in Sacramento. This is reflected in a lot of the patients that come through this ER. So, it can be a challenging department. Since UC Davis (level I trauma center) is so close to SMCS, SMCS is NOT a trauma center. Having said that we get a lot of trauma patients that are dropped off in front of the ER lobby (GSW, drug OD, etc.).

    Advice to Management

Continue to treat your ER staff well! This is a hard department to work in. So, take good care of your staff to help increase the retention of your highly skilled staff.

    Pros

They work hard for their employees. They try to create an upbeat atmosphere with positive feedback.

    Cons

They are not very competitive with their wages for the market. They don't offer sick tine, but instead PTO that you have to work forward to.

    Advice to Management

    Re-evaluation of the market.

I worked at Sutter Health as a contractor

    Pros

Room for growth both personally as well as professionally, mostly great morale, provide great amenities (coffee/cafe)

    Cons

Upper management is rarely seen, moving up from entry level is hard, moving from Contract to FTE isn't talked about much nor is it easy to do.

    Advice to Management

Better communication/motivation for contractors to move up into FTE (Full Time Employee) positions
